Please check the USB cable and the USB connector at hard drive enclosure, and also if it uses external power supply, check if any power indicator turns on when you connect it to a power outlet.

I have a Dell 2400 Desktop that all of a sudden won't access the login screen. It powers on then the hard drive makes noise with the green lights blinking but it then says press F1 to continue but

First thing, check to see if the is a floppy disk in the floppy drive, if so removes this disk. If there was no disk in the floppy drive then it may be a hard disk problem.
Check the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected, if not open the case and re-seat the data cable on the hard drive and also where it connects to the motherboard disk controller.
If it still gives this error message and the BIOS does not detect this hard drive, then the hard drive is probably faulty.

To get the computer operating again, install a new hard drive in your computer and then install Windows on this hard drive plus the computer's device drivers and your programs.

My Book suddenly cannot access files, needs formating

If you are running Vista, You might be one of many people who are reporting an update that is causing some buggy behavior. Try this:

Connect the drive but do not Format the drive, right click 'my computer' then 'manage' go to 'storage/disk management' view the drives; your usb drive will not be allocated a drive letter. You can set one manually or leave it for about 2~5 minutes for one to be allocated auto. Each time you connect the drive you may have to do this.

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.
