Assuming weedeater brand weed eater, the carb. has a filter screen, that blocks and does not allow the pump to push sufficient fuel. A phillips head screw on the side of the carburettor secures a square plate, remove the screw and plate and gently brush the screen clean, dirt collects on the visible side.
Dirty foam filters if fitted change the fuel mixture and make it too rich to run.
and the fuel mixture knob, although secured by a tension spring, moves and may need to be readjusted

Trying to start for the first time it cranks but will not fire up. I have fresh oil fresh gas and have gas valve open. I tied opening the choke and closing and no success. Am I missing something?

Remove the spark plug and see if it is wet. If it is, you have gas in the combustion chamber. Check the gap.

Does it have a kill switch? Is it electric start?

The choke needs to be in operation until the generator is warm.

I havent used my generator in about 6 years. I filled up the tank with fresh gas, cleaned the spark plug with a wire brush and it still doesnt start. Is there anything else I could do?

If it hasn't been run and it had gas in it when it was stored, chances are the carb is messed up. When gas sits for a long period of time it turns into a varnish like substance. You can take some WD-40 and spray into the air inlet with the air filter off. Set the choke on and see if it will fire. It wont run very well but it should fire. If it does rebuild the carb.

Wont start

Make sure you have new fresh fuel in the tank; Check to see if spark plug is firing; if not , check the coil. If all of the above checks out ok, the carb might need cleaning. Have you checked all switches ? Any loose wires?

Will not start. May need a new spark plug. What size is it?

it should say on the side of the plug very carefully hold the coil wire about a 1/4 inch away from the head or other metal object and crank it and see if it is firing be careful and dont get shocked and make sure to stay away from gas tank and gas fumes and if it sparks chances are it is the plug

and check the oil level because it has a low oil shutdown switch and if it is out of oil or low it wont start

We have a Coleman Powermate 5000 generator that won't start

It is really common for generators and things that are not used really often to have the fuel turn to varnish in the gas tank, and carburetor. If it smells like really old fuel, you may be in for a tough time, but before you give up, pour out all the old fuel, and replace it with clean fuel. Then try to choke the engine as you normally would. If it does NOT start and run normally, take the spark plug out, and dip it into the gas tank and quickly put it into the engine, and re-attach the wire and give it a pull. It should hit a few times if you have good electrical fire to the plug. If it starts, kill the engine, and tighten the plug. If it does not start after trying this a couple of times, the carburetor will meed cleaning of the old varnish and jells.
