Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Opener eye beams

I had a new Liftmaster opener installed in 2006, to operate a single-car 1950s wood garage door. There has been nothing but trouble with the beams since about 3 months after installation; they never stay aligned for more than a week and now not even for a day. Unfortunately I can't remove them even though I don't have kids and they are of no use to me. Help, please!

Call the installer and ask him to remove them as they dont work
seems only fair if they never worked properly for very long

I dont really understand what kids have to do with a door not working sorry even more so if you have don't have any kids, lol

This should be a simple fix for the installer.
Keep me updated thanks

It sounds like a problem with the infrared safety beams, either they are not working, are misaligned (someone might have kicked/bumped into one), or I even had one that didn't work because there was too many cobwebs/dust covering one of the lenses.

My liftmaster will open with the remote but to close the door, we have to hold down the wall unit. It starts to close, jerks to a stop, then we have to press and hole the button and it closes.

Hi, it is probably the safety photo beams out of alignment or not working, when this happens the garage opener goes into 'dead man' operating mode, ie you need to keep the button pressed for the door to operate. Garage door won't close with remote and I have to hold the pad to make it go down, however it opens just fine.

Your safety reversing sensors must be connected and aligned correctly before the garage door opener will close. An obstruction in the path of the sensor will also cause your door to not close.

This sensor is an electronic beam, which is sent between two sending and receiving "eyes". These eyes face each other and are located just inside your garage door. They may need to be adjusted so the beam from the sending eye is properly detected by the receiving eye. Once the receiving eye "sees" the beam from the sending eye, a green indicator light will glow on the top of the eye. Tweak them a bit. If both lights do not come on you have bad sensors.

When you push either the remote or the switch at the door, the garage door will go down almost to the bottom and then come back up and the light will blink several times. This does not happen all the time....

Replaced door sensors now door will not go down and light flashes

The safety eyes are either installed wrong, or you have the wrong type. Craftsman (liftmaster) has what they they call old style and new style safety eyes. You can not interchange the types.

Sensor light

I assume you have a Craftsman or Liftmaster operator and you are talking about the photo eyes (sensors). If this is true thanone light will remain on if there is power to it and the other will go out when the photo eye beam is blocked or are not lined up.

Thank you for your your question bry4man. I look forward to answering any more of your questions.

Programing limits on a Grifco MK3 Garage door Operator

It has the "Protector System" (safety sensors). chec the sensor indicator light on the receivinng eye the green light had a slight flicker.cleaned both the sending eye and receiving eye lens of dust and cob webs, then realigned the receiving sensor for a steady green indicator light. then check the door function it now works fine.over time, temperature, and viberation the sensors become dirty and get out of alignment, as no one had tampered with the sensor alignment prior to this. Hope this works for you.
