Try Repairing the Permissions on the Mac.
1: Click on Finder
2: Click on Applications
3: Click on the Utilities folder
4: Click on Disk Utility
5: Click on Check Disk Permissions
6: Wait for scan to look for errors
7: When done, click Repair Disk Permissions if there are errors
8: Close Disk Utility and see if your problem is solved

Thanks for your answer, but I have already done that to no avail. I've been talking to Apple support and there seems to be nothing wrong with the hardware and all other applications are working quickly - just not cs5 - especially Indesign, which is really crawling. I have tried turning off live screen draw, spellchecker, page thumbs - still very slow. Please help!
