Dear ianrbrown
If you installed the complete driver softwares, you can see 'HP support center' application. From that you can see the ink level status. You can see directly by clicking on status link or From setting link You can see a Printer tool box button which will show the current ink status. Thats all

Hello,

follow the procedures below;

Check the back of your computer to make sure that the printer is appropriately connected to the computer and is plugged in. If the printer is not plugged into the computer, find the printer jack on the back of the computer and plug it in before you move on to the next step.

Click on the "Start" menu button which is located on bottom left hand corner of your screen. Click on the "Settings" bar and notice that a list of functions pop up to the left of the settings button. Click on the control panel icon.

Look for the printer/fax icon in the control panel window. Double click on the printer icon.

Find the icon for your printer in the opened window and right click on the icon. Now click on the "Preferences" option.

Look for the menu box pop up with tabs near the top of the box. Click on the "Services" tab.

Click on "Service this device." You will find the button on the Services menu that you just activated.

Click on the estimated ink level tab and a graphic will appear indicating how much ink is left in the cartridge.

I hope the above helps.....

Good luck.

The HP Solution Center should provide you with your ink levels.

SOURCE: Have HP Deskjet 940c on Windows 7. Only drivers

Find another computer (laptop?) that is running Windows XP or Vista. Install the HP device-drivers.
Connect the printer to that other computer, and use the software to display the ink-levels.

Why can't I find the ink level of my HP 7960 printer the way I did with Windows XP?

The ink levels are a feature of the HP software. What probably happened is that when you had WIN XP you loaded the entire software package which included the ink level utility and with WIN 7 you may have only loaded the basic drivers which does not provide this capability. Check the HP support site for a full software package and see if that brings it back.

Can no longer check my ink level.

Sometimes Windows 7 drivers need to be downloaded from the HP support site. Also, make sure you have installed the application on the CD that came with the printer in addition to the printer drivers. That is what you would have run under Programs before. If your Windows 7 computer was not used to manage the printer before, you will need to install the HP management tool on it in order to see ink levels.

Ink levels

On Windows XP I could see the ink levels however now on Windows 7 there is no way to see ink levels or to clean the print heads. I have to use my iMac to see ink levels and clean the print heads.
