Go the HP's website and look for customer support and download drivers and software for your printer before trying to connect to your notebook. (www.hp.com)
Enter your printer model info and search for a driver for your operating system. Download and then install it on your notebook, then connect the printers usb cord & turn it on. The notebook should automatically recognize the printer once the cable is attached - and you will see a pop up icon on the bottom right side of your screen near the clock area that tells you this. Try connecting the cable to your notebook and watch the bottom right side of your screen at the same time. You should see it auto recognize the printer. If it does not sense the printer after installing the software, then go to your control panel and choose "printers" to manually install it by following the prompts.
This method will not work installing a networked printer connected to another computer on the LAN. Vista requires the inf file to add a networked printer. HP site does not provide the required INF file. Recommended fix is throw away the HP printer and purchase a Canon printer. Canon printer drivers are so easy to obtain and setup.
