PC66 SDRAM
PC66 SDRAM is the original module speed of SDRAM. PC66 SDRAM was the earliest version of SDRAM and therefore came in a number of smaller megabyte sizes than later versions. Most early motherboards were rated for PC66 SDRAM. The available sizes are 32MB (megabytes), 64MB and 128MB.
PC100 SDRAM


PC100 SDRAM was released after PC66 SDRAM and runs at a higher speed. It has the same number of pins as the earlier memory module and is capable of utilizing the same RAM slot. The only difference when installing this SDRAM in compatible computers with older systems (PC66 slots) is that the SDRAM will run at a slower speed. PC100 RAM comes in sizes such as 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB and 512MB.
PC133 SDRAM

The last generation of SDRAM is PC133. The PC133 memory provided a speed upgrade and comes in larger sizes than previous generations of SDRAM. PC133 modules are backward compatible with older SDRAM slots. The PC133 memory, however, will be forced to run at the slot's slower bus speed (PC66 or PC100). The memory comes in sizes like 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1024MB.

Three things to consider when choosing memory

1) What is the Maximum TOTAL Amount, that the motherboard will support.

2) What is the Maximum Amount for EACH ram memory slot.

A) What type is it?

Single-Data Rate SDRAM?
SDR Sdram which is erroneously just referred to as SDRAM.

Double-Data Rate SDRAM? DDR Sdram
Double-Data Rate 2 SDRAM? DDR2 Sdram
Double-Data Rate 3 SDRAM? DDR2 Sdram

Then you get down to the basics, that is really supposed to be known...........

B) What Frequency Rate does it operate at? ('Speed')
200MegaHertz? 266MHz? 333MHz? 400MHz? 533MHz? 667MHz?
800MHz? 1066MHz? 1333MHz?

C) What Voltage does it use?
JEDEC has set the standard for Ram Memory.
'High performance' ram memory may use higher voltage.

Example;
DDR Sdram
JEDEC has set the voltage standard for DDR Sdram at 2.5 Volts (DC)
That is what the factory has set as a default voltage, in BIOS Setup.
High performance ram memory? May be 2.6 volts, or 2.7 volts.

D) Ram Timings;

ECC ram memory is generally used in a Server computer.
The data (Information) is analyzed 2 to 3 times, before it goes through.

G) Chip Configuration:

The black rectangle chips on the side/s of the ram memory module ('Stick'), are called DRAM chips.

They are arranged in an order, and connected via circuitry, to be accessed as the ram memory manufacturer has deemed.

This you shouldn't have to worry about.
In fact you can probably get away without knowing D) also.

Whats my sdram capacity

HP Pavilion 9694C memory upgrade specification, Pavilion 9694C maximum memory, memory speed, and memory upgrade options. Upgrade memory on HP Pavilion 9694C upto a maximum of 256 MB
PC100/133 SDRAM DIMMs, with maximum 128MB per slot in 2 memory slots. The HP Pavilion 9694C takes the PC100/133 SDRAM DIMMs Memory Type.

DDR SDRAM memory has 184 pins, where as SDRAM has 168 pins. DDR SDRAM Memory is a new type of SDRAM that is able to double the read / write speed of the previous generation of SDRAM memory. There are currently, PC2100 (DDR266), PC2700 (DDR333), PC3200 (DDR400), PC4200 (DDR533) These DIMMs are 184 Pin in size and are not interchangeable with older SDRAM modules.

Can i use DDR2 RAM instead of DDR1

YES, if your motherboard accepts DDR Sdram, and DDR2 Sdram ram memory. If your motherboard has both types of ram memory slots.

BUT, you can ONLY use DDR Sdram, OR, DDR2 Sdram.

You Cannot use both types of ram memory in the motherboard, at the same time.
(BIOS will only recognize one type at a time)


NO, if your motherboard does not have ram slots for both DDR Sdram, and DDR2 Sdram ram memory.

Double Data Rate Sdram ram memory modules, have 184 gold plated contact pins on the bottom.

Wanting to findout what kinda ram i need to get for an upgrade. this computer only has 256mb.

SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM)
Almost all systems used to ship with 3.3 volt, 168-pin SDRAM DIMMs. SDRAM is not an extension of older EDO DRAM but a new type of DRAM altogether. SDRAM started out running at 66 MHz, while older fast page mode DRAM and EDO max out at 50 MHz. SDRAM is able to scale to 133 MHz (PC133) officially, and unofficially up to 180MHz or higher. As processors get faster, new generations of memory such as DDR and RDRAM are required to get proper performance.


DDR (Double Data Rate SDRAM)
DDR basically doubles the rate of data transfer of standard SDRAM by transferring data on the up and down tick of a clock cycle. DDR memory operating at 333MHz actually operates at 166MHz * 2 (aka PC333 / PC2700) or 133MHz*2 (PC266 / PC2100). DDR is a 2.5 volt technology that uses 184 pins in its DIMMs. It is incompatible with SDRAM physically, but uses a similar parallel bus, making it easier to implement than RDRAM, which is a different technology.

Can I put different types of RAM on a motherboard?

Not different types per se, but you may be able to put different speeds.

Type would be like DDR Sdram2_bing.gif, or DDR2 Sdram for example.

Speed is a slang term for Frequency Rate. What frequency rate does the ram memory2_bing.gif module (Stick) operate at.

Example: DDR2 Sdram that has a frequency rate of 667MHz. (PC2-5300) MHz stands for MegaHertz.

Mega = approximately 1 Million. Hertz stands for Cycles per Second.

The above ram memory module operates at 667 Million Cycles per Second.

If you install two ram modules that have a different frequency rate, all the ram memory installed will operate at the slower frequency rate.

(Provided the computer will support more than just one frequency rate)

Have a computer in mind, or is this just a generic question? A what if?

If this is in relation to two different manufactures of your ram memory, it shouldn't be a problem.

Where you may get into trouble in this area, is if one ram memory module (Stick) is generic, or low budget, and one ram memory module is a high performance gamer ram memory.

Without knowing the exact manufacturer of your computer, plus the Model name of it, and also knowing the information you have about your ram memory 'sticks', the following information is just generic, or general information.

High performance ram memory may use a higher voltage. Not always, but a good portion of the time.

High performance ram may also use a faster set of ram timings.
It may also have high density DRAM chips, and the chip configuration may be setup differently.

(The black rectangular modules you see on the side of a ram memory 'stick', are DRAM chips)

To explain so far;

SDR Sdram was the typical ram memory for years after SIMM ram memory.
SDR stands for Single Data rate.
Commonly just referred to as Sdram, but in actuality that is erroneous.

(Sdram stands for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory)

Then came DDR Sdram.
Double Data Rate Sdram.
Then DDR2 SDram.
Double Data Rate 2 Sdram.
Then DDR3 Sdram.
Double Data Rate 3 Sdram.

SDR Sdram specifications were all over the place. What was considered to be a standard for one manufacturer, differed for another manufacturer.

The JEDEC organization was formed.
JEDEC sets the standards for ram memory from DDR Sdram on up.

Voltage for DDR Sdram is 2.5 volts
DDR2 is 1.8 Volts
DDR3 is 1.5 Volts.

Ram manufacturers found that by upping the voltage requirement on high performance ram, the ram could perform, better.
Not true in all cases, as there is high performance ram that operates at the JEDEC standard.

Ram timings were also varied.
Also the chip configuration
Plus the density of the DRAM chip.

Unless it is a really cheap, generic ram module, (Stick), there will be a manufacturers code on the side.
With this code I can tell you the specifications of that ram module.

No SDRAM is single data ram, with 2 slots in the bottom and DDR is double data ram, with one slot at the bottom.
