PS3 MoBo Reflow Guide

This will only fix certain motherboard issues. This fix will solve YLOD issues cased by the system getting so hot the CPU / GPU or direct chipsets get shifted. This fix uses a heat gun to heat up the CPU / GPU and direct chipsets and allows them to fall back in place.

I used a standard heat gun (dual, High, Low settings). Check the temp on it though. You want it around 700-750 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some Additional Tips Not In The Guide:

  • If you have worked on PCs this shouldn't be that hard. If you have worked on Notebooks, you shouldn't find the PS3 to be very difficult at all. Most notebook chassis are far more tedious then the PS3's.
  • DOWNLOAD THE GILKSY GUIDE!!!! Read the guide a couple of times. Note the manner in which the PS3 is sitting in each photo.
  • Have the guide open on your notebook or PC as you work. Otherwise print it out.
  • Make sure you have enough time to take it apart and put it back together. It will take about an hour maybe an hour and a half. You don't want to take it apart then try to put it back together the next morning.
  • Make sure you have a clean work area. With PLENTY OF LIGHT, I used my kitchen counter.
  • Have places to sit parts out of the way.
  • Have the right tools, you don't want to strip every screw.
  • Get a ground strap in addition to the tools outlined.
  • Have several containers to keep the screws in, one for each level of "disassembly" is what I used.
  • Careful getting the first rubber foot off, I trashed mine.
  • Keep track of where the coarse threaded vs. fine threaded screws come from. The coarse threaded screws generally screw directly into the plastic chassis.
  • Clean the pieces as you disassemble the PS3, a vacuum with a hose attachment and canned air work great. Stubborn dust bunnies may require a paper towel dampened with alcohol.
  • Keep the work area clean as you work. Be careful not to vacuum any screws. This will insure no dust (or pet hair) get into the new thermal CPU compound which could severely effect it's performance.
  • When you get inside the system get a sniff of your power supply, if it smells burnt, this fix MAY not work.
  • A few minor steps are missing from the guide, but they are fairly easy to figure out.
  • Careful with the ribbon cables, each one has a clip to hold them on. Some release the opposite way of others.
  • Righty tighty, lefty loosey!
  • When assembling the PS3 make sure you have all the cables where they should be as you put it together. You don't want to have to take it back apart a bit to get a cable where it's supposed to be. Be sure ports meet the port-holes as they are supposed to. Over all everything should have a tight fit.
  • When you put the screws back in you just need to secure everything, you aren't entering a strongman contest. Over torquing these screws may result in a funny looking PS3.

after following that there are 6 more parts to it ... (linked in the Description of that Video)

It is completely broken. It can only be fixed by specialists or Sony if it is still under warranty.

The ps will start and then click off leaving flashing red light

Hi Kim,

If you are getting the YLOD or yellow light I will run through what causes it and how you can fix it.

Causes:

The yellow light is caused by internal overheating and the main chips that take the damage are the GPU and the CPU.

You need to stop the heat build up and you will be able to get back to gaming again.

Solution:

You can either send the console back in for repair and they will fix it for you, however it will take about 4 weeks to get this done and it will cost about $150 for the repair!

Quicker Solution:

For a faster way to fix it you can use a good YLOD Repair guide that will show you with videos how to stop the heat build up and get back to gaming.

The important thing is to make sure that you get a guide that is up to the job!

I have put together a list of the best PS3 Repair guides and a complete review below:

When i put ma ps3 on it goes green yellow red

Hi,
I experienced the same issume before. This is called Yellow Light of Death or (YLOD)
Please see below on some information regarding this issue and some possible reslotion to prevent this from happening:
If we go by Sony's definition then having PS3 YLOD means "general hardware failure". So it means that a fault could have occurred anywhere in your Console. Don't be afraid though, since most of the times PS3 YLOD is due to motherboard getting detached.
Tips on how to fix it:

Alternatively you can try to repair ps3 YLOD yourself. There are a couple of things you can try to fix YLOD - check for any loose connections since some connections might be loose, you can also try switching it off for around 30 mins and switch it on again. This will help in cooling your PS3 down.

If these tricks don't work, then I will suggest you go through a dedicated PS3 repair guide instead of tinkering on your own. Such guide will cost you almost nothing in comparison to what Sony charges. And, god forbid, if it happens again you can solve the problem for free.

One of the greatest thing about doing it yourself is that you don't have to pay hefty charges to the big companies. Also, you don't have to wait for weeks, you'll completely fix ps3 ylod in no more than a few hours. Many people have already successfully fixed yellow light of death and I don't see a reason why you won't be able to do it. If my PS3 has yellow light of death then I won't pay Sony to repair my PS3. I'd rather fix PS3 lights myself.

If all this steps wont work i suggest to call SONY

PS3 Red/Yellow Light

If you are seeing this error it is because the GPU and the CPU have overheated and you will need to stop the heat to fix this. You can send the console in and they will fix it for you but it does take about 4 weeks to fix.

You can quite easily fix this with a few household tiems from home.
