Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

Missing USB controller driver

After Vista upgrade, there are two "Unknown Device" showing in the Device Manager under the USB section. The Properties describes them as USB controllers which are missing drivers. I have 3 USB ports, none of which currently work but did before the upgrade.

In addition, there are 3 ATI I/O Communications Processors; 2 USB 1.1 OHCI controllers and 1 USB 2.0 EHCI controller. All seem to be working fine.

There are also 3 USB Root Hubs which all seem to be working fine.

I am confused about what the two Unknown Devices actually are AND what I need to do to get the USB ports to work.

Any ideas?

When posting driver issues, you need to specify what kind of equip you are dealing with, not just the issue. Most liekly you need to go to the manufacturs website of your motherboard or laptop and find vista drivers for it.

Unknown device win 7

Usually, when you buy any hardware the drivers come along with it on a disc. If you lose the driver disc you can always download the necessary drivers from the manufacturer's website. But what do you do when you are not sure of the manufacturer of the hardware? Well now you will know what to do.

Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager) The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box. You should see a code similar to this: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
& REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0 In the text above the Vendor ID and Device ID will always be in the same place for the driver Vendor ID = 8086 and Device ID = 27DC your numbers will be different. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to PCI Database. There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID. http://www.pcidatabase.com/
b>Windows 7 First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.

In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. Hope this helps. b>

Hi,

You just need to download the appropriate audio driver for your motherboard. Go to the Device Manager and install all missing drivers for "Unknown Devices". Either connect to the internet or use the driver disc which came with your laptop.

For those who doesn't know how to access Device Manager, please follow the steps below.

For Windows XP:
Start -> Run -> Type devmgmt.msc (in the box) -> Right click Unknown device -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver

For Windows Vista and Windows 7
Start -> Type devmgmt.msc (in the start search box) -> Right click Unknown device -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver

Hope this helps.

Sound not working

Hi,

Check Device Manager to for any "unknown devices", your audio device driver might be one of those. Unknown devices usually appears if the device driver (ex. audio driver) is not installed. You can also find an "exclamation point" under "Sound, video and game controllers" if there is conflict on the driver causing no audio to be heard from the unit.

To resolve the issue, you can either use the Drivers installation disc which came with the computer or Right-click on the "unknown device" and select "Update driver" button.

For pc users who doesnt know how to check device manager, follow below steps:

Windows XP
- Start > Run > type devmgmt.msc on the box then hit enter key. or you can also
- Start > Right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager

Windows Vista and 7
- Start > type devmgmt.msc on the search box then hit enter key or
- Start > Right-click Computer > System Properties > Device Manager (link at the left pane)

Hope this helps.

I have no built-in web cam. The person that fixed my laptop put in Windows Vista and I can't find my web cam

the driver for your USB webcam is missing after installing Vista.
Right click "Computer", open Properties, open Device Manager on the left, find if there is an alert saying unknown device or sth, if there is the unknown, update your webcam driver.

Computer not recognizing any usb devices

Well, appears that your configuration can handle 4 GB of memory. I checked the Acer website for upgrades for your model, and nothing appears to jump out which could solve your problem. A few appear to be possibly helpful, but some are for XP, not Vista. Upgrading "launch manager" might be a good thing.

However, Belarc tells me that on my Acer 5630 i have listed under "Bus adapters" the following:
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C9
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CA
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CB
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC
And, under "other devices", i have a USB Root Hub (5x). Obviously, the two match. I go to device manager to check them out, finding them under 'univesal bus controllers", to see whether they are all working properly, and and they are. In addition, opening "system devices" reveals something called a "plug and play software device enumerator", and that checks out to be working fine as well. Check your equivalent out to see if you find a problem to fix. Hopefully you will. Let me know how things go.
