I am running XP on a Inspiron E1405. I can play CDs but not DVDs. I ran the three step Solution that Rakesh suggested without any errors in the Dell diagnostics. I get the error
    Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
    /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";}"The video decoder has eithermalfunctioned or is not installed."
    Thanks for your help.

Hi
We will first start with these steps and let me if is still resolved or not.
1. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461
Do this step and restart your laptop. Let me know what kind of dvds are you using. Are they movies or with data.
2. Run a 32 bit dell diags on the drive. You can access Dell diagnostics by pressing F12 when you seeing the Dell logo when you start the system. You may have to try couple of times to get to the screen. It will show you one time boot menu. Select diagnostics. Alternatively, if you have Dell diagnostics or drivers cd, insert that and in the one time boot menu select cd dvd and press enter.
It will take you to the diagnostics menu. Select Test my system, then custom diags and then ran a diags on the drive. If they test fails it might be time to replace the drive. If you are in warranty talk to dell tech support and tell them that 32 bit diags on drive failed they will just replace the drive, if not in warranty let me know I will help you in ordering the spare parts online. Drive is not that costly.
3. IF the diags have passed and still having the issue boot system to safe mode and then go to My computer, right click the drive and click on explore. Check if you can see any contents of your dvd. If you can then the culprit is the OS or windows xp then we can do more steps. To access safe mode press F8 when u see the dell logo during start up.
Do share you experience so that I can know how it is working

Thank you

Well, I know this is from 2008, but I am working on someones machine that's a Latitude D620. The drive will read Cd's fine, but it has a real issue with DVD's it seems. It will read older DVD-RW's, and any factory made DVD. It has a real problem getting any data from DVD-R and from DVD+R DL. It will occassionaly get the name of the DVD, and after awhile sometimes will show the contents. On rare occassions they will start to boot and only get so far. I burned them at different speeds including the slowest the DVD would allow. I ran the diagnostic test, drive is fine. I looked at that microsoft link, but it is for Vista. Would buying a new one correct this? If not what can I do? This is a real pain. Thanks. <:0)

My acer computer dvd player reads some dvds but not all of them. the model is AM5630-u5202A.

If your DVD player cannot play some movie DVDs then the DVD disc may be from a region that is not compatible with the DVD player.
To make your DVD player region free, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

DVD SOHD-16P9S drive doesn't read any kind of CD or DVD

hi,there is no problem in drivers .
check the hardware parts
there are 2 possibilities in your case
1.the laser beam which reads the dvd or cds is malfunctioning
2.ensure that the cable & buses are properly connected

..
in case laser beam is damaged you got to get it repaired for proper functioning

all the best

My imac dvd drive reads DVDs but ejects CDs and installation disc

The optical drive has separate hardware for reading CD-disks and for reading DVD-disks.
So, "half" of the drive has failed. Replace the drive, since that will be less-expensive than an attempt at a repair.

When I want to copy a CD must I only record on a CD blank disc; i.e. not a DVD

It depends upon what type of data you want to copy onto a CD or DVD.
If you want to copy and play music in a CD player then it needs to be on a CD disc.
If you want to copy and play movie DVDs in a DVD player then it needs to be on a DVD disc.
If you want to backup data files then it can be on either CD or DVD discs (depending upon the amount of data to be stored on the disc - CD holds 700 Mb, single layer DVD holds 4.7 Gb, and dual layer DVD holds 8.5 Gb of data).
A DVD player can read both CDs and DVDs, but a CD player cannot read DVD discs.

Does the toshiba sd 2502 , can it burn cds

It is a DVD ROM drive which stands for DVD Read Only Memory. In other words, this drive is meant to only PLAY DVDs and CDs but NOT save data to them.

To burn CDs you need a CD burner. Burners are of 3 types:

CD writer only burns and reads CDs.

Combo drive reads CDs and DVDs but only burns CDs.

Super drive burns and reads from CDs and DVDs.

As you go higher in functionality, the price also increases. Check your needs before you plan to buy one. Also compare prices of all the drives. Note: burn-able media costs are separate.

My lg dvd writer could not read all dvds (it reads some cds and dvds). What may i do?

This may be caused by bad media, or incompatible formats. There are a variety of media formats for CDs and DVDs. Your reader may not read them all. What model are you running, and what type of media (DVD-R, DVD+R, etc) are you using?

My samsungsd616tdvd drive cannot play or read dvd-rw cds.

Please note that the formats of DVD and CD are quite different. Whereas a DVD drive can handle both DVD and CD, a CD drive can only handle cd formats. Furthermore, a drive that reads both formats does not necessarily mean it can handle the writing aspect ok. You need a drive that is capable of writing/burning DVD. Most drives that come along with pcs can only write CDs but able to read both. So check your drive to see whether or not it can write on DVDs ok. Good luck
