If you do not have communication by the printer when connected by USB cable to the USB Port on the Computer; you are lacking the updated printer drivers. Go to Brother on line, plug in the DCP 8040 ( the printer mod.) in the support area, and download the current printer drivers. Install the drivers and see if you can now connect properly. You can also use the Windows DEVICES to locate the printer and check for updates.

The brother printer's cartridges do not have smart chip hence its a mechanical problem in the cartridge hence remove all the cartridges and inspect with a spot light in the cavity where you install the cartridges there may be something causing the sensor to malfunction. And at the same time try to shake the cartridge a little and then install back slowly as there is a lever which is present in the front portion of the cartridge and this what the printer looks for.

DO RATE MY SOLUTION

On the back of the printer there should be a place to plug in at USB B cable. This is a square whole (check an image search for what USB B looks like). That cable then converts to a standard USB to plug into your computer.

Trust me, this is the BEST way and the EASIEST way to refill black and color LC61 or LC65 inkjet cartridge from Brother. See the pictures

1. cut the plastic part (see picture). You can use a utility knife or a steak knife (very easy to do)

2. make a hole on the left side (NOT in the midle) and do it straight and don't go deep (see picture)

3. poor the ink with your refill kit and do it straight and don't go deep because the inner side of the cartrigde is made of cheap plastic (like a plastic bag) and you don't want to perforate it

4. put your plug, tape, hot glue or what ever you have to seal the hole.

5. put the cartrigde back in your printer, do a print test and this is it.

First install the driver and software then restart the computer then connect usb cable to computer then if it need driver clik on no at this time .
then install from sleected location browse your folder then locate the driver folder then it install

Your computer should pop up and tell you that you've installed a new piece of equipment anytime you plug something into the USB port, since most peripherials are plug and play. If not, then it doesn't recognize the printer. You may have a bad USB port. Try plugging the wire into a different USB port during the installation process.

With Brother, you have to use their installation CD and follow their instructions. You can't hook up the wires till *after* the CD has walked you through their installation process.

Try reinstalling using their CD and a new USB port to see if it will work now.
