In Internet Explorer or your browser of choice type the following in the address bar:

192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (depending on router setup)

You should see a log in option. Check your manual for the default username and password.

Two Questions Connecting with Belkin Wireless Router...

To answer the first question, please provide what kind of operating system you are using, and please provide the exact error message. Its probably just a caution/nag that you don't really have to worry about, but if you provide more information then so can we.
For the second question, you will need to setup the WEP on the laptop to get the laptop to connect to the router via wireless, regardless if it was used to setup the router, the wireless network is encrypted so it will need to be accessed by a computer(s) that have the key programmed into them. You can plug in the laptop into the hardwire Ethernet port for configuration, that is another option.

Start up wireless linksystem

I believe that once you make the connections to your modem, you should be able to log into the router to set it up by opening a web browser and putting "http://192.168.1.1/" or "http://192.168.0.1/" (without the quotes) into the address line. The default username and password is usually "admin" and "admin" or username "admin" with no password. From there you should be able to configure the router as needed.

In order to do this, you either need to be able to pick up the wireless signal (and have the WEP or WPA key if it's already secured), or connect your computer to the router via Ethernet cable and then take the steps above.

Lastly, once you're in, check the router's manual (if you have it), to see what the recommended settings are. The nice thing is that routers make connecting to the internet easier for you: then work with the modem to figure out the IP addresses for your networked computers, as opposed to having to go into your TCP/IP settings on your computer and having to mess around there.

Let us know if you have any success.

Password settings

if you are talking about wireless security, you will find the settings under Wireless Security in the routers setup page.  The default will be HTTP://192.168.1.1  no username, default password of "admin"  If you are talking about the router's password itself, you will find that under Administration in the same setup page.
