I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista OS. When I started it this morning, it powered up, but then appeared to go into a hibernation state. The screen is black, the power button is blinking alternating between blue and amber and it won't shut down when I hold down the power button. I can't wake it up or shut it down.

Try disconnecting power adapter and removing battery for two minutes. If the laptop still does not boot then there is an hardware problem. You can try taking out and putting back ram modules, but my suggestion is to take the laptop at a repair shop, if you cannot fix it by removing battery.
