Hi all,
I recently purchased a used Vivitar 285HV Flash. My Fuji Finepix S602
seems to have trouble triggering the flash reliably.
On the flash, there is a flash test button - sometimes I have to press it a
couple of times before the flash fires. Is this normal? Other flashes I
have used fire EVERY time the test button is pressed.
Anyone else have a similar experience?
Thanks.

integrity of the contacts of the battery cartridge, both cartridge and
inside the flash unit. The capacitor is not fully charged until the back
lights flash green and red, but it should still discharge when you hit
the reset. I learned on my Oly C-4000, however, that I can only get it
to discharge if I'm in the camera's manual mode if it's plugged into the
camera. Good luck.

The flash works much better on AA batteries (I was using NiMHs before).
It seems I need to wait about 5 - 10 seconds after the red/green starts
blinking before I can get a reliable flash.
It could be a problem with the capcitator.
The flash I got seems to be in REALLY good condition... almost brand new,
so I find it odd.
Luckily there is a Vivitar repair centre in my city, maybe I'll drop it
off and see how much it costs to get it to fix it.
It's only a minor nussance - I just hope I don't miss any shots because
of it.

I do the "push to test". Make sure the red/green light is showing
charged before you test. For some reason, flashes seem to have
a problem with battery contacts and you may not be charging all
the time. On the other hand, if the red/green is flashing and the
push-to-test does not work, there is a different problem.
