First make sure you have the right modules (DDR 1 or 2 and the speed 400mhz or something similar).
Then when you insert the new modules, does the computer beep?
Of not then you ok, if it gives you al log beep there is a memory error.
And if you have a integrated GPU it takes some memory for its own use.
Or maybe the computer cannot handle 2GB.

It is OK to mix chip (SODIMM) capacities in the 2 slots in your notebook.
The best system performance will be when you have 2 x 512MB but for now if you install 1 x 512MB, you could even leave the old chip in the other slot, it'll be fine.
