Question about GE Profile JGBP79 Gas Kitchen Range

Open Question

We had a fire in our oven a few years ago broiling a steak. Since then the broil and bake only stay on for a few minutes before the oven shuts off. The error codes displayed on the range top are: F3 and/or F2. Could you tell me what part we need and if we can fix this ourselves?

SOURCE: broil element will not work

You need to check the oven sensor. It should be about 11k ohms. This is the metal rod in the back top of oven cavity. Access it from the rear. UNPLUG POWER FIRST!!

It is very common for elements to "catch fire" when they fail. It is really electical arching. But to answer your question you shouldnt be concerned if it ever happens to the bottom element immediatly kill the breaker it will stop instantly. dont use a fire extinguisher as it wont stop the arching. And most ovens do use the upper broil element for baking for very short intervals like 10secs on every minute or so to brown the top of product. Some models (especially older builder line ) do not

Find the bake ignitor (you may need to remove bottom drawer or oven cavity floor to get to the ignitor). Turn on the bake. If the bake ignitor comes on (starts glowing after a few seconds) - check the amperage on the bake ignitor wires when it's on. If the ignitor is a round style - amperage should be 2.5-3A, if the ignitor is rectangular - 3 - 3.6A. If less than 2.5A or 3A respectively - replace ignitor. If the ignitor does not come on - check the voltage on the ignitor, should be the line voltage 110-120v AC. If there is a line voltage on the ignitor and it's not coming on - replace.
Ignitor part numbers for round style ones: 4342528, WB2X9154, SGR403, 5304401265;
rectangular styles: 12400035, WB13K21, WB2X9998, SGR412, NR020, 5303935066, 814269, 9753108.
Ignitors of the same shape (i.e. rectangular) are interchangeable, if you can splice the wires.

You're actually referring to the "broiler" elements. Most electric ovens have these at the top of the main oven space. (Some gas ovens are set up the same way, but many put the broiler elements in a bottom drawer.)

As their name implies, broiler elements are active only when you're broiling. They will not go on for baking.

Broiling is the process of cooking food by exposing it directly to a high heat source at close range. To broil a steak, for example, you would place the pan holding the steak on an oven rack raised to the top or next to top position in the oven (consult the manual) and set the oven to broil. The top elements will then turn on and cook the meat by direct radiation.

Most people, however, use ovens for baking far more often than for broiling. Baking is the process of cooking food (cakes, casseroles, roasts etc) by indirect heat. In other words you raise the oven to a certain temperature, put the food on a rack more in the middle of the oven, and let the surrounding heat cook it over time. When you bake the top broiler elements usually don't come on at all.

What does a broil pan do


The broil pan is used to broil meats such as steak or chops. the top part has slots that allow the grease to run into the lower part. they are usually under the burner in the lower door. but some ovens have the broil element in the oven proper. then the pan should be placed within a few inches of the broil element. You should monitor the cooking process because the broiler heats the food very quickly and could burn very fast.

Auto clean problem


You say you checked the thermal fuse but did you check the broil element for continuity. Most ovens use the broil element for the clean function. The thermal fuse will shut off both the bake and the broil element.

It is common to have the broil element pulse on or they will send 120 volts to the broil element to even the heat in the oven. Some ovens have a preheat function that will power the broil and bake simultaneously until the oven reaches temperature then the broil element will shut down. If they both stay on red continuously through the entire bake process then something is wrong. Probably a stuck contact on the control.

Unplug the range.
I would open the control console and locate the BAKE/BROIL terminals on the Oven control. I would reverse the wires,plug the range in and try again.
Sounds to me like someone has changed out a part and wired it wrong.

I have the same problem. Just swap the 2 wires that are marked as 'broil' and 'bake' on the controller board. But sometimes it switches back, then I have to swap the wires again.

You might want to leave the 'broil' post unconnected to prevent burning food..

try to hold down the light switch on the door set it up for another cleaning hit start when oven clean door lock showes hit cancel if that doesnt work try unplugging it for three min fyi the doors can take up to an hour to un lock after cleaning its so it dont burn your face off from the intense heat after cleaning some take 2
