Question about Philips Magnavox DVD/VCR Dual Player

2 Answers

External tuner I recently purchased a Magnavox DVD/CD Player with Video Cassette Recorder. I did not realize that this unit has no tuner system in it so it cannot received TV broadcasts without an external tuner or any such device. So therefore I am unable to record and television program. Just wondering if you could tell me where I could purchase such an item? Please respond if you are able to help. The model No. DV220MW9. Thanks, Terasa Goeddeke

If it's possible attach a free-view box to it.

if you're in the United Kingdom try ASDA they do cheap one's in there about £12-£15. Or if outside UK then try a superstore where they sell TV's and stuff. But it's not worth forking out loads of money for one. They all do pretty much the same job hehehe. If it works you'll have extra channels to watch.

How can I record a music cassette to a music disc on my Magnavox DVD recorder/ VHS --Model # ZV427MG9

You can't burn a CD-A with the ZV427MG9. The unit will not burn to a CD to play in a CD player.

You may be able to record the audio to a DVD with no video source. Connect your cassette player to the Line In audio ports (L/R) at either the back or front of the unit. Depending on your cassette player, you may need a 3.5 mm M to RCA F/F adapter to connect the RCA audio cable to the cassette player's headphone jack. Do not connect a cable to the video input of the composite input unless you have a video on a camera or something to play back. This means that the recorded video may say "No Signal" or will be black or static. (Note: this may not work with this signal issue.)

Set the unit to record to DVD on L1 or L2, as needed, by pressing Source on your remote. Advance the cassette to where you want to record. Press Rec on the DVD unit and then press Play on your cassette player. If you want to identify tracks, Stop the recording and play back and then press Rec and Play again. You are at risk of having issues with the volume during the recording. Clipping of overly-loud sounds and distortion is possible.

When done, finalize the disc, if desired, to play the disc on other DVD players.

If you want to make an audio CD, you would be better off using a computer and connecting the cassette player to the Line In jack of the computer. You do have to make some adjustments to avoid recording the default Microphone input. Use a program like Audacity or any other audio editing program. Record the signal and divide it into tracks, if needed. Now you can filter out any distortion as well. Then save as a WAV file. Use a different program to burn the WAV files to a CD-A. (This must be burned as a mastered disc; my attempts that worked on an older CD player failed if there were gaps between the tracks. Lots of programs will do this; Roxio Creator is one option.)

The manual for the ZV427MG9 is available here: http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/z/zv427mg9_f7/zv427mg9_f7_dfu_aen.pdf .

I hope this helps.

I cannot record digital when I try to set up my Magnavox ZV457MG9 (DVD). The unit will only record in the external L1. I have a Comcast box.

This is normal for the ZV457MG9 units. The Magnavox ZV457MG9 does not have an analog (NTSC) tuner; additionally there is no digital (ATSC or QAM) tuner either. It will only record on line in (L1) which is a composite input (limited to SD). The HDMI port on the recorder is an HDMI out to TV, not an input. The component video jacks are also only outputs.

The manual for the Magnavox ZV457MG9/F7 is available here: http://download.m4c.magnavox.com/files/z/zv427mg9_f7/zv427mg9_f7_dfu_aen.pdf . The unit was manufactured for Magnavox by Funai; thus another link to the manual is http://www.funai-corp.com/6pdf/om/ZV427MG9.pdf .

I wish that I had better news for you.

(If your DVD/VCR recorder had a tuner, it would record off a coaxial (antenna) cable input. Many DVRs can record off the HD connection (HDMI or component); that may be a better option for replacing this Magnavox unit.)

I have a Magnavox ZV427MG9 DVD Recorder VCR Combo. Do I need a separate tuner? If so what kind? Thanks

Hello
Ofcourse you need an external tuner to receive any RF signals. Your Magnavox is not equipped with internal tuner with it. OK.

The antenna out for the coaxial broke off.Can it be fixed?Or do you still sell this model? It is the Magnavox/video cassette recorder/dvd recorder,model#MWR20v6,searil#D25642475A.Or do you sell a newer...

sure it can, just a bit of soldering. unplug and open up the unit. the outside of the coaxial housing is the ground side, and there should be a very small pin that will insert to circuit board. you just need to reconnect them. Ive used hot glue in a pinch before.

--- for some reason this unit does not finalize automatcally.

--- the instructions for finallizing are on page 52 of the owners manual.

--- they are as follows:

1) Press Setup

2) Scroll down, select "Disc Edit", press "OK"

3) Scroll down, select "Finalize", press "OK"

4) Select "Yes", press "OK"

Finalizing will start.

--- have done this operation several times, works Ok.

Channel selection

L1 and L2 are just line inputs. This unit does not have a tuner so there are no channels to select.
It requires you to be connected to a TV broadcast via a cable or satellite tuner box... and then would only record what ever channel you were viewing. The DVD is a player only.
It sounds like you should have purchased a DVD Recorder or a DVD/VCR Recorder. The players normally do not have a tuner. A Recorder should have an built-in digital tuner. Some also have the old NTSC tuner and may also have a QAM tuner.
