1. Only the 64 bit operating systems "see" 4GB of RAM. If you're using any 32 bit system, it is only able to address 3 GB therefore the remaining 1 GB is not being used.
2. If you are using a 64 bit system, such as Vista 64, Windows 7 64 or any Linux x64; you might need to upgrade your BIOS first.

a.) go to http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
b.) on the left side, in the search field, type your laptop model
c.) select your laptop from the search results list; select your operating system and go to BIOS section and download the most recent BIOS image.
d.) go to BIOS utilities section and download the "Windows BIOS Flash Utility"
e.) use the "
Windows BIOS Flash Utility" to upgrade your BIOS. Be extra careful when doing it. Make sure your battery is fully charged and that you're plugged in. Close all other applications when upgrading your BIOS.

3. If you still see only 3GB after upgrading BIOS to the newest version, there is only one thing left to do - wait for the manufacturer to prepare a new BIOS version that will support 4GB.

I am using asus p5kpl-am se motherboard with c2d 2.93, 4gb ddr2 ram, 1gb zotac geforce 9800 series pci card with xp sp3 os. When i check properties from my computer the memory ram is showing only 3gb...

ASUS P5KPL-AM SE supports up to 4GB RAM. I think that 1GB RAM is shared with the PCI Express Graphic Card.

For further details about your CPU and Graphic processor, I suggest that you download two small free utilities

Just wondering if I can upgrade my ASUS F5RL M/B to 3Gb or even 4Gb RAM as Vista uses a lot. Thanks

The manufacturer states a maximum of 2 Gb of RAM for your laptop. And if you have a 32-bit version of windows it may only recognize up to 3 Gb, even if you put in 4 Gb. I would recommend not using more than 2 Gb, as this is what Asus recommends, though I've seen laptops such as yours work just fine with more. You know it would work fine with 2... anything more would be taking a chance that it may not remain stable while operating. So it's up to you if you want to try. If it mysteriously re-boots with 4 installed it won't actually hurt the machine. It's just annoying when it suddenly dies and re-starts while you're using it, and then you'll need to remove one of the mem. cards to bring it back down to 2.

Not recognizing memory.

The Asus P4S800-X MB can use Dual channel DDR memory and single channel memory. The dual channel memory which comes in matching packs. (Normally 2 DIMMS per pack) is the faster memory.
In other words if you are installing, 4- 512MB DIMMS of PC3200 all memory should be matched,
or you're MB may not see all connected DIMM'S.

See page vii in you're manual. If you're running windows XP, Home or Pro edition the bios will show up to 4GB of memory installed but windows XP 32bit will only show 3GB of memory. As mentioned above all 4 of you're 512MB of memory should be dual channel and run at the same speed. You can run both single channel and dual channel but you must follow Table 1 in you're manual. (1-9).
Example; PC3200 400MHz.
Or 4-512MB PC2700 333MHz. See page 1-9 for memory configurations and the QVL list supported.
Check out Asus FAQ's; http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4S800D-X&product=6&os=17

This should help you configure the memory.
Good luck!

some systems require matching pairs, so since you are using mismatched, it may only recognize 1 GB of the 2gb module

OS not showing full RAM

Hi Shibbymusic, as with most Asus boards if not all! The MB
A8N-E does not show all of your 4GB memory. See this FAQ;
http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A8N-E&os=17
Like you, I too have 4GB of memory.
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe w/4GB memory only see's 3GB
The bios displays 3GB during boot up & so does windows XP 32bit.
You might want to think about upgrading to 64bit os.
Updating your bios should help as well.
(See A8N-E Bios version 1010); http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=A8N-E&SLanguage=en-us

Thank you for using fixya!

Maximum RAM not achiveable for KT4V

What Operating System and revision are you running?
I don't believe that XP 32bit (not sure about 64) will recognize 3GB of RAM, but Vista will as long as your MoBo (Mother Board) supports it or possibly even more than.
My Asus MoBo will utilize 4GB but Vista 32bit will only utilize 3.48GB or so, and Vista 64bit will take up to 8GB if the MoBo will.
Let us know what O.S. you're running?

Bios update failed

Windows XP can't see more than 3GB of RAM -- never has, never will. Even thought the BIOS may show 4GB, Windows will show 3GB - not a mainboard problem.
