Question about Cobra 200 GTL DX 4-Channels Base CB Radio

8 Answers

No output I have a Cobra 200gtl. It has no output at all. When I key it up the transmit light works but the radio meter just falls. It shows nothing on my external meter and does not even draw on my power supply which I can tell because it has an amp meter on it. I kind of think something burnt out that kicks in the transmit side because of the no current draw part. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It was the driver transistor RD16HHF1. Write an email to cobra. They send a new one. Sort it out, then sell the radio quickly! 73,s 13EL121

Thanks for all your response. In the end my went back to a shop inthe UK (Knights) and they did fix it. It was the output transistor (or the middle stage he said) and it cost less that £20 to fix.

Thanks again

The problems with the 200gtl was a ongoing problem with final driver I also bought mine 2nd hand and it lasted 31 days
then the samething you described took it to a local tech and had it repaired at a price of $110 But now it works very well and I really like this radio

No its the same in all modes. Its RX is OK and the TX light comes on but with no output. If you key the mike and then change bands the needle jumps a little and then slowly falls. Very odd!!! I have taken it to the shop today but they have said they do not have much hope they can fix it as it is a know fault that has to go back to COBRA. I bought mine second hand so that isnt an option :o(

It sounds like the final transistor may be shorted/burned out. If you don't know how to locate or test the transistor you'll have to take it in to a tech. These transistors are usually quite cheap but as to the labour cost it depends on your tech. Usually what causes this damage is a bad antennae match or a bad antennae itself, even a shorted antennae cable. After you've repaired the radio check the antennae and cable first before connecting it up again, then check your match with an SWR meter. Good luck

Meter don't work

Hook radio to a dummy load with a watt meter in line---if no actual power being transmitted radio will not go to cal or show transmit power.

My Cobra 29 LX receives including the weather but can't transmit

If the relay contacts are closing. You may have blown the output transistor, however a broken wire in the microphone can also create the symptoms you describe. .

you can check by using a #47 light bulb soldered to a PL259 connector as a dummy load. If it lights, the carrier is present, but you may not have voice modulation which will show as differences in light intensity as you speak. If no modulation, the microphone is the first thing to look at.

The relay contacts may also be very pitted or corroded and not achieving continuity.

Take the cover off, flip it over solder side up, check all solder joints for cracks, cold solder joints, check the safety diode where it comes in the radio, before I go further, can you pick up the weather channel?...Does the PA work?...need to check the pre-driver and finals, audio chip, hook up the power meter using a coax three foot jumper from the output from radio to the input of the watt meter, then the antenna, first check the SWR, on the scale on the meter to cal/swr mode, adjust it to spec, then while still keyed down turn the dial to SWR,if it is the safe range your ok,then turn the Dial to 10 or 20 watt scale and key the mic. Does it have any wattage? If not suspect the finals, they are located on the back rail, if it does have RF then its the audio chip, its located on the right side rail facing you, closest to you.remove it and replace it with same ....hope this helps....

Cobra 29LTD CHROME low tx no mod, rx good low Vol, talkback good

1 why would you change the finals?? Have you checked you antenna? How are your SWR's? Crappy antenna's cause a lot of problems.

Use an external meter to see what the SWR is, and see what the output is PEP. If its low, then there is something wrong. If it is High, change the mic and turn up the dynamic all the way.

Next. Have you been messing around in there?? Tryin to get more wattage? You turned VR4? If you thought you were turning it up by turning it all the way to the right, you turned it all the way down. Turn it all the way to the left.

Cobra 200gtl High Power Transmit problem??

Depending on the type of power supply, radio frequency (RF) energy from the transmitter may be 'fooling" it into thinking that you're overloading it. Check to see if there's any discernible dimming of the meter lamp when this problem occurs, if so, the supply is the culprit.

Otherwise, its probable that the final amplifier transistors are overheating, either they are 'leaky' or not properly attached to the heat sink.

Cobra 29GTL Won't Transmit

if the red ant light comes on this means that you have antenna trouble either in the antenna itself or the coax but this should not have anything to do with the radio not transmitting. it sounds to me that you have a bad audio chip or a bad power output transistor. in either case you should really take it to a cb shop and let the professionals solve your problem, good luck!!
