    Have the same problem.
In my case the iris of the lens is open - It is just that the lense has a telescopic thing that should extend out from the main case. In my case it extends only half way before grinding to a stop. Then we get the 'lens error' message. I have removed the 6+ screws on the unit but have been unable to figure out how to open up the casing.  As I suspect the problem relates to the gear mechanism and might be something real simple such as a grain of sand or misaligned cog somewhere in the system. The local Nikon  agent isn't interested in attempting a fix - suggesting that it might be cheaper to buy a new one from a resale outlet.

Hey jamber716,
I am assuming you mean the lens cover is half open and won't close or open. You could try blowing compressed air into the lens to try and dislodge whatever is making the lens cover stick. If that doesn't work I would have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. You could bring it to a Geek Squad® precinct in a Best Buy™ store and they should be able to send it out to an authorized service center. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

My samsung S1050 lense will not open or close, it is stuck half way.

forcing it closed usually ends badly...stripped or sheered gears.TRY putting pressure on the lense durring power up...if it feels like it will move let it go....next using a small jewelers screw driver try to pull the lense open ...may take a bit of playing...be patient!

My camera lense won't go in. Everytime I switch it

Your batteries are too low.
When you switch on the camera, the lense go in. Then lense comes out fully. Then, if the batteries are low, lense goes in and camera turns off.
But if the batteries are too low, camera turns off before the lense retracts or even before the lense comes out fully.

Hello I have a canon IXUS 960 IS. Yesterday when I was using the camera it only closed half way when powering the camera off. Now the camera doesn't open fully and when pusing the "play" button the power...

If the outside of the lense get dirty, those small particles may prevent the lense from opening and closing 100% as nomal times. I had the same problem with my Sony. Here is what I did.

1- I cleaned the outside(sides not the lense itself) of the lense.
2- While turning the camera off, I press on the lense (up and down motion) NOT too hard for a few times untill it either retracted all the way inn or most of the way in. If most of the way in, press the lense a little harder untill it retracts 100%. If you turn it back on, it should work as normal unless some mechanical part of the lense is broken or dislocated. When it fully opens, clean up the outside of the lense and keep it always clean for normal operation.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

Unscrewing lenses

Hello toccata, It sounds like your lens mount is cross-threaded. Have you gotten a lens off and looked closely at your camera lens threads. Are they crunched together. You may need to get your cameras lens mount replaced and check all your lenses and see if the threads aren't cross threaded. If a lens has bad threads, don't use it anymore.
