This netbook is really the Acer Aspire One D255. You have to pop off the keyboard, then remove 4 screws that hold the back panel in place, which will allow you to remove that back panel in order to get to the memory.

You're welcome - I was disappointed by the answers I saw that were just a repeating of the Gateway support page - I knew there HAD to be a way to do this. I'm glad that I investigated more - we both now are able to double the memory of these great little netbooks.

Although I've never worked on this particular model, most netbooks have a small door on the bottom of the unit that covers the system memory module. There is usually a single screw holding the compartment closed. With the unit turned off, remove the screw and open the door to see the existing RAM module. Use the two tabs on either side of the module to remove it. Then slide the repalcement module in its place and reinstall the door. If the unit turns on and boots to Windows, you were successful

Http://www.crucial.com/eu/upgrade/compatible-memory-for/LT2704u/list.html This is the RAM upgrade for your computer. On the bottom of your computer there may be a compartment that has screws on it. You could unscrew the bottom compartment.
Take out the old ram by pressing the two prongs on either side of the little green card and it should release. then insert your new ram on your computer. Make sure it makes a clicking noise when you insert the card. Close everything back up and turn on your computer and go to system information and make sure that it reads the new ram.

While the Gateway LT27 netbook series supports a total of 2GB of DDR3 RAM memory, due to the design of the netbook, the RAM memory on the Gateway LT27 netbook series is not replaceable by the customer and Gateway does not support upgrading or replacing the RAM by the customer.

How to open casing and upgrade the RAM in Gateway LT2811u?

A) No, the case does not lend itself for easy access to the Ram Memory.

B) 'Other site' is full of beans. Impossible to replace, or upgrade the Ram Memory? Must not be a professional product support website, and does not have computer techs.

1) Work on a table. If the table is on a carpeted floor, refrain from swinging your legs. Observe Anti-Static Precautions.

[ Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

With a desktop computer you can relieve your body of Static by;

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open.
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF, you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

No such luck when working on a laptop/notebook/netbook/tablet.
An ESD wrist strap should be worn, and it's alligator clip connected to a good ground source.

{ Average cost of a Electro Static Discharge wrist strap, is around $3 to $6.
Example,

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103245

(It isn't just a piece of wire connected to an alligator clip, and to your wrist. The wrist strap has a metal plate which contacts the skin of your wrist. The metal plate is connected to a 1 Mega Ohm resistor, which in turn is connected to the wire going to the alligator clip,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antistatic_wrist_strap )

I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, Empty desktop computer case ]

It may be argued that you are just replacing Ram Memory, and an ESD wrist strap is not needed.

In this instance I will agree.
There is a metal static shield under the Keyboard, and next to the Ram Memory. The Processor is under the motherboard. (To the right of the Fan Assembly, when looking down from the top)

Also, ram memory modules ('Stick') are coated with a see-through plastic coating, on the Body of the module.
(Refrain from touching the gold plated contact pins on the bottom)

I would place a clean towel on the table, to protect the table, and the Netbook, lay the closed netbook upside down on it. (Bottom side up)

2) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

3) Turn the netbook over, open it as far as possible.
Remove the Keyboard

4) Removing the Keyboard:

At the top of the Keyboard, (LCD screen side) there are 4 Tabs to release.
They are from Right to Left;
Above the DELete key, F12, F8, and F4 keys.

If you look close you will see four thin rectangular pieces of plastic, above the noted keys.
These are depressed down.

I c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y press down on them, with a flat tipped Jewelers screwdriver.
Start on the left side with the release tab above the F4 key.
Once depressed the Keyboard will be released from this tab.

Go to the next tab, and so on.
Once all release tabs are released, the top of the Keyboard should pop up, a little.
S-T-O-P!

The Top of the Keyboard is lifted s-l-i-g-h-t-l-y up. Do Not raise it too high.
There may be side tabs also. These will pop loose once the top of the Keyboard is raised up slightly.

There is also a Keyboard Cable attached to the Keyboard.
It is Not needed to disconnect this cable, and I STRONGLY advise against it, as the plastic tabs of the connector on the motherboard, will break VERY easily.

Leave the Keyboard Cable attached.
The Back of the Keyboard may have plastic tabs protruding from it.

This is why the Keyboard is only raised to a slight angle, also.
With the Keyboard in an approximately 45 degree position, move it forward a little, then roll it over, and lay it down.
(Top of Keyboard lays down)

The bottom of the netbook has a Door. This Door is removed for access to the Ram Memory, and Harddrive.

Keyboard removed there are 5 screws marked with Door next to them, to remove.
Push on Door Release (Pretty hard) to ease the Door out.
Then go around, and gently pry the Door off.

Each ram memory module has a spring clip on the side. Each side.
The top of the clip is gently moved to the outside, just a little.

The top of the spring clip has a 'bump', or protrusion, which fits in a Side Notch, on the Ram Memory module.
Once both spring clips are eased out, the Ram Memory module will slightly spring up.

DO NOT remove a Ram Memory module in a straight up position!
You will bend contact pins down in the ram memory slot on the netbook, and damage the contact pins on the Ram Memory module.

The Ram Memory module is brought out in a 45 degree position.
It is installed back in the same position.

Handle the Ram Memory module by the Body. The body is coated with a see-through protective plastic. (The gold plated contact pins are on the bottom, of the Ram Memory module. The rest of the module is the Body)

When the protrusions of the spring clips are fully seated in the Side Notches of the Ram Memory module, the Ram Memory module is fully seated in the ram memory slot.

(Note*
The spring clip protrusion, and the Side Notch, are not a perfect fit.
A little leeway is allowed )

The Gateway LT2811u Netbook PC uses DDR3 Sdram ram memory, that operates at a maximum frequency rate of 1066MegaHertz.
(1066MHz)
It is PC2-8500 that is SO-DIMM.

The Maximum TOTAL Amount of ram memory is 1GB.
There is 1 ram memory slot.

Regards,
joecoolvette

[ Mega = Approximately 1 Million
Hertz = Cycles per Second

The above ram memory, can operate Up To 1066 Million Cycles per Second, frequency rate. ('Speed')

RAM upgrade for Gateway model MFATXNIN NMZ 300L?

Hi,
The system takes PC133 SDRAM, as far as i know without performing a BIOS flash it can take up to 1GB (2x512MB) most of these PC's are restricted to 2x256 so a BIOS flash could be imminent in this case.

Good luck

Gateway wont take new ram???

Was the memory made for that specific model? I know that on Toshiba laptops sometimes you have to buy the memory that was specifically designed for that model. You can always try a website like kingston. They may make the memory specific to your laptop mode. If you would like more help please feel free to reply.

I want to know if I can upgrade the harddrive and memory

Depending on the memory you already have you can install upto a maximum of 1GB 266MHZ DDR, and cannot see any reason for not being able to upgrade your hardrive for a bigger one, but be aware that the Operating system backup will probably be on a seperate partition on your current hardrive, unless you got an installation cd with your laptop.
