Question about Whirlpool 19.8 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator ED20TQXF

1 Answer

Thermostat control Dear Experts, I have this Whirlpool side by side refrigerator model EP20PKXWN00. This has a thermostat controller - control knobs for the freezer (A B and C) and refrigerator (1 2 3 4 5). I had turned the freezer to B and the ref between 3 and 4. I was surprised that it defrost by itself after running the unit for 5 hours and the water lid pan almost filled up with water. I had it drained and adjusted the control to lower. Freezer to A and Ref to 2. Again, it auto defrost after an hour and I have to drain the water again from the lid. Every day, I have to drain the water from the lid! I just bought the unit from a couple who left to Canada for good. I had it running this only for 3 days and it's a bother that I have to watch the lid to keep it always dry. Is this normal? Or somethin wrong with the control? Please help. :(

It's just a bother that draining the water from the lid happens to be everyday. This unit has 3 controls ( the freezer, refrigerator and also the moisture control). I happened to lower the thermostat to warmer for the freezer and at knob turned to 2 for the refrigerator. I observed that it defrost every an hour and water drains after 8 hours. And now, I put it back to B for the freezer and between 3-4 for the refrigerator. The current is okay now but need to wait for sure after 5 hours it will auto defrost and will drain water again and has to dry the lid to avoid overflow or will mess the floor under. Dear expert, is there any other way to lessen my time watchin and dryin the pan everyday? Or I have to anticipate the time for it? Please reply.

Your system most likely has an automatic defrost system. The auto defrost system should actuate every 8 or 12 hours. Under normal conditions the water from the drain pan will evaporate between defrost periods. The defrost is controlled by a timer and NOT by the temperature controls.

If you are truly getting excess water from each defrost you must look elsewhere for the source of the water. All items stored in the refrigerator and freezer should be stored in covered containers. Door gaskets should seal. Door gaskets can be checked by closing the door on a paper and feeling for resistance as you withdraw or slide the paper such as a dollar bill.

Refrigerator is not getting cold

There is a small fan, behind an inlet panel, somewhere in the freezer. This fan is electrically inline with the refrig side thermostat. The refrig gets its cold from the freezer as needed via this fan. It is likely that the little fan motor has gone out. Usually when the freezer is working ok (although it can be "spotty" because its not getting proper circulation either with some models), but the frige is not getting cold -- it is because either this little fan motor has gone bad, or the thermostat it is inline with.

If you have a multimeter, you can check to see if 115 volts AC is being applied to the fan motor. If it is and the fan is not spinning then the motor is bad. If there is a lack of voltage, then the thermostat is bad. The thermostat sits behind the control knob for the refrig.

Good luck with it. If this has helped you, please take a sec to rate me. Thanks!

Check the back wall of the freezer for frost . If there is then it is either the defrost heater, timer or thermostat. If there is no frost check to see if the fan in the freezer is running.

Sounds like you need to replace the thermostat which is located behind the refrig control knob . Tap on the knob and if the refrig starts , replace the control behind the knob .

We have an older model whirlpool and cannot find the freezer control dial. But, we easily found the fridge control dial. Could you help me with this? the model is ET8W/TK/ET/8WTM

if it is not in the center of the back of the freezer then it may not have a control for the freezer. the control for the freezer is just a flap that allows more or less air into the refrigerator side. so the only thermostat in a refrigerator is the one in the refrigerator side.
