hi welcome to fixya
here is my solution for that problem, first lets verify to narrow down where the main cause it could be. lets use first a dvd cleaner, dust can cause the optic lens not to read. then insert a dvd observe the light indicator ( yellow ) if blinking which mean the optic lens is starting to read the disc, if not it doesn't read. so at this time you are going to remove the cover with your dvd drive just to know and access the mechanism as will as the optic lens. now turn the power on and insert the dvd look for the optic lens if emits red light then moved going up to read the disc which mean the optic lens has supply. then check the spindle motor if rotates normally if not check the motor replace if defective. one way on how will you check the motor if defective through using a analog tester, check the resistance on the positive and negative terminal of the motor if the resistance is almost 0 ohm or shorted which mean it was worn out need to replace. hope this will help thanks for consulting through fixya.
goto run and type "compmgmt.msc"(without quotes) and select disc management if the dvd drive is showing below the hard disks means your dvd drive is working fine only thing you have to do is to right click on the CD-Rom 0 and change drive letter and paths to it .if the CD ROM option is not seen in disk management then you have to go to the device manager option under computer management and expand cd/dvd -rom drives and you will find your dvd drive model if not that means that your dvd drive has got hardware problem
Does it not acknowledge dvd disc only or cd or dvd both. If it doesn't read the dvd disc, or able to play dvd disc, but able to exlpore regular cd's, then you have a codec error, and you need to download a dvd codec like powerdvd for it for your system to play dvd disc. Check to see if your dvd-rom drive appears in the "my computer" window, if it is there, but wouldn't be able to play anything, then it could be a driver issue. so make sure in the hardware , the drivers is installed and working properly. If it is working properly and driver is installed, then you got a bad drive, the optical laser lenses isnt reading or the spindle ain't working anymore if you don't hear disc being loaded when inserting the disc.
Hi there. It sounds like the lens on F drive has gone as i cannot read disks, there is nothing you can do about this once the lens has give up. The best thing you can do now is remove it from the desktop and just carry on using the DVD/RW as this is the only optical drive you need because it reads and writes DVD's and CD's.
