sorry... posted that in the wrong place.

argh! me, too! i love this camera, but the lens cover is just plain
stupid. we used the camera at the beach for a couple days, and i could
tell a grain of sand got stuck behind the lens cover. now it is jammed
and the camera is totally out of commission. why make a camera built
for outdoor conditions, then put a lens cover like that on it!! i can't
find a tech who can fix it, either. went to three shops in NYC and all
said the cost to deal with it would pretty much buy me a new one... !
    :(

I had same issue, just removed the front face plate. There was accumulated gunk holding the lens cover. Gently wiped it all clean and presto! all good. You are not opening the camera, just removing the front face. There are three small allen screws on the front and a small phillips screw on the edge. You will need a very small (1.5mm) metric allen wrench (found in common allen wrench sets), and a very small screwdriver for the little screw on the side (found in common micro screwdriver sets). Keep track of which hole each allen set screw came from, they are all different, in fact one appears to be just decoration and has no threads, I just secured it with a tiny dab of all purpose adhesive (Ace hardware brand). Check the tab near the lens goes back in place. Dr. John Christensen

Lens stuck open on Lumix DSC-TZ5

This is a common problem when something goes wrong with the lens system.
This can be as a result of numerous problems.
Try to pull the lens as turning on and also gently twisting it in and out...just may make the lens go back on track.

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-tz3 camera. I dropped it and cracked the lens cover and badly bent the metal lens part. Can I order the new lens and replace it myself, or must it be sent in? It doesnt seem to...

If you don't know already, then I wouldn't try repairing it. Consider selling it on ebay to a repairman who fixes and resells them. Then buy a good on from a repairman or someone upgrading, for a good price.

Doesn't sound like an amateur's repair to me. :)

Panasonic tz3 cover gets stuck

Common problem with TZ3. You can try to lub lens cover using graphite lub. Use it sparingly and after lens works, wipe off excess with dust cloth. Be sure not to get any on lens itself.

If lub doesn't work, you can pull out the lens cover altogether and find a manual lens cap the will fit.

The other option is to sell it on ebay to a repairman in a auction and replace it with another working used ones. Keep your accessories and by a used one cheap without accessories.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 Lens Won´t Open

This is a common problem with TZ3s. Power the camera on, then puff a little graphite onto the lens cover and coax it open with a tooth pic. Do this, powering the camera on/off till lens opens normally. Add little more graphite if necessary, but sparingly.

Graphite is used because it is extremely slippery, but will not attract dust like an oil will. At the same time, it is black! so you don't want to use anymore than absolutely necessary make lens work. Even then, check to be sure lens itself is clean after, and wipe carefully with an Eyeglass lens cloth only if necessary.

Another option in to remove the lens cover altogether by just pulling the leafs out of the camera. Another option is to sell your working but lens cover problem to a repairman on ebay, and buy a good TZ3 or TZ5 on ebay used, refurbished or new. Good prices if you bide your time.

Don't put in your best bid to the very last minute of the auction. In the mean time, put a camera you are interested in on your MyEbay Watch list and set a reminder alarm on your cell phone about 5 minutes before the auction is to close, then if the price is still good, enter your best bid 30 seconds before the end of the auction. Refresh the auction page on your PC to keep track of the bidding right up to the last 30 minutes so you can see the last remain bid and if it is worth outbidding on this camera. Again, if you are not in a hurry and bide your time, you can get a great buy. There are plenty of these cameras sold every day.
