Dear chris woods1,
I believe you mean an iPhone? If yes, try going to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars , look under Accounts and see if you have anything listed. If not, click Add Account and in there choose the type of email server that you want to use on your device (Google Mail, Aol...), and write your email, password and if you choose Microsoft Exchange, you will have to add additional details.
If under Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Accounts you have account/s, try deleting them and adding them again. After you have re-added them, go back to your mail icon in your home screen and see if you see more folders except Trash.
In all cases be sure that you are adding the email address and password correctly.
Regards,
I would try re-syncing your iphone with itunes and making sure under the info tab on itunes you have sync mail accounts selected. It sounds like for some reason the last sync didn't work successfully and it may need to be resynchronized to fix this.
Try deleting your account and then adding it again.
You can do this by click on Settings from your homescreen, and then selecting Mail, Contacts, Calendars. From there, select the account with the issue, and then press Delete Account. This should take you back to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars menu, where you can add the account again. Doing this will not delete any of the messages from your account.
