    Hi

I'm working with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy and always have had some problems with the sound, but after the last update I don't have any sound even at system start. At this moment I can't re-install ubuntu. I have tried with the last two suggestions but any of it are working.

When I try to switch the mute from desktop panel a message appears saying the GStreamer pluggins are not installed. I've re-installed the the gstreamer pluggins but there's no change.

    Thanks for your help

I tried both sudo command lines in ubuntu 8.04 and response was no such file. As stated in my original I get sound in system. I get sound when I go to generate noise however when I go to record I am not seeing the intense graph configuration as I saw in noise generate. Plus absolutely no sound on play.

I have no sound with Hardy (in fact, I started with Gutsy and didn't have sound either). I can play mp3's and CDs, but at a website with sound, say, www.homestarrunner.com, I get nothing. I tried the install packages, & start alsa utils, still nothing.

was messing wiht chmod just once and now I can't use alsa. Have uninstalled the alsa-utils and gstreamer files and then restored alsa and gstreamer files. I want to know how to restore the permissions file for alsa so that it will access my sound card.

  • Steve Cornall Mar 25, 2009

Thanks jhonF. I have had no sound ever since I switched to 8.04. I have searched the internet for weeks, reading about and trying solutions that seemed like they might work. None did. I had to use your full solution for success, but I now have sound again. Strange bug, hope it doesn't carry over to 8.1.

i cant get the sound to work

  • bluebrandy May 05, 2009

I am brand new to Ubuntu, and I'm no computer expert. I have a Dell Dimension 8250 that uses a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live sound card. I installed 9.04, and it appears to have installed my hardware drivers. However, I am unable to get any sound from my computer. I clicked on System-Preferences-Sound and attempted to run the various "Tests" using all the listed drivers. I clicked on the speaker icon above the right side of the desktop, and I raised all the various volume settings to mid-level. Still no sound. When I run XP the speakers work just fine. The problem could be something simple, but I have no idea what to do next. I have never used the command line and, if possible, I prefer to use the tabs and icons to adjust the configuration. In all other respects I like the Ubuntu OS, but this could be a deal breaker. Desperate for help!!

Hi Josh

First of all check system setting.

It seems like your modules are not loaded, if you just installed, I recommend you to
re-install Ubuntu, if this is not the case, try to run -

sudo apt-get -f install

If everything fails, try this - sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start

    I found this also helps.

    sudo apt-get install module-assistant
    sudo m-a update
    sudo m-a prepare
    sudo m-a a-i alsa

    Good luck.

I have a single installation of Ubuntu 11.10. How do I remove it and install Windows 7? Have tried from the Windows boot disk but I dont know what my drive letter is as Ubuntu does not name it????

Hi,
You can use the windows disk to over-write the ubuntu installation. Just boot from the windows disk, and when it asks where to install, tell it to format the disk and create a partition from the unpartitioned space. Windows will format the disk and you should be good to go. Keep in mind, everything on the disk will be lost.

My computer is about seven years old so I can't really upgrade to a newer OS. I am still using Ubuntu 8.04. Anyways. The problem that I have is earlier my computer screen turned black. So I rebooted...

My computer is an old Compaq Evo. It's around the same age. And I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 just fine. I upgraded from 8.04, to 10, now to 11.04
I have to say 11.04 has amazing drivers, everything seems to work 100% of the time with it now. And it supports more PNP (Plug-n-play) devices
Best part about Ubuntu is, you can upgrade, and down grade based on your likes or dislikes.

I'vre downloaded Ubuntu onto a USB stick but when I double click on it it tells me Windows cannot open this file and needs to go online to find.....

You have to boot from the key to get Ubuntu to work. Turn the computer off and plug the USB key in. Then turn on the computer again.

If everything was good you'll see Ubuntu.

If not you need to change your bios settings so your computer tries to boot from USB or you need to remake your Ubuntu USB key.

Bios settings depend on what computer you have, you should see something flash quickly on the screen durnin start up saying press del or esc to change bios.

To remake your USB download the Ubuntu you need and this PROGRAM .
Just follow the prompts.

Feel free to contact me if you need further help.

Hello,
Please try switching just to Analog Stereo Duplex mode only. When you do this, the linux kernel will only load the ALSA(Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) drivers for the Audio Device, which works in all cases. If that fails, go to System>Preferences>Main Menu and enable the Multimedia System Selection menu. When enabled, select ALSA Mixer default device ONLY.
Have a great day ahead. All the best.

Iam using ubuntu 9.04.sound card is not working.I

If you are getting sound through your speakers then the sound system is working. If you lose the sound when using the headphone jack then either the headphone jack is faulty or your headphones are...

Although, rarely, you may find that opening the alsamixer from the terminal will fix the problem as some versions of Ubuntu have a special volume control for the headphone jack....

You will need to open the mixer as the Administrator
Type
su aslamixer

If this helped please vote kindly

No sound in ultimate 1.8

I had the same issue - I had system sounds but video/movies and music apps would not play sound.

This resolved it for me. I use OSS (open sound system) This command lets you choose your default sound system, so therefore the apps within Ubuntu know what to use to play sounds. =]

goto a terimal and type

sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base

Choose your sound system - By default for Ubuntu it is ALSA

Ubuntu sound problem

Ok here what you need to do, when you start your pc or laptop, you need to press the escape button (ESC) it might be the delete button depending on how old is you pc or laptop, and change the KERNEL to the previous version, as it seem that one of the latest kernel i cannot remember if it is the 2.24.18 ? as a bug about the sound. so what i did was to reverse to the previous KERNEL.
So do it and enjoy
PS: please keep in mind that any spcifique setting like your "preload" or "prelink" or the tweak of your profile "preload" will be lost so you will have to do it again.
Hope this answer your trouble.
