Can't get the sound to work on Ubuntu, I tried everything I know, pls help me!!!

Same Problem

May 05, 2009

-   I am brand new to Ubuntu, and I'm no computer expert. I have a Dell Dimension 8250 that uses a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live sound card. I installed 9.04, and it appears to have installed my hardware drivers. However, I am unable to get any sound from my computer. I clicked on System-Preferences-Sound and attempted to run the various "Tests" using all the listed drivers. I clicked on the speaker icon above the right side of the desktop, and I raised all the various volume settings to mid-level. Still no sound. When I run XP the speakers work just fine. The problem could be something simple, but I have no idea what to do next. I have never used the command line and, if possible, I prefer to use the tabs and icons to adjust the configuration. In all other respects I like the Ubuntu OS, but this could be a deal breaker. Desperate for help!!-   bluebrandy

-   Thanks jhonF. I have had no sound ever since I switched to 8.04. I have searched the internet for weeks, reading about and trying solutions that seemed like they might work. None did. I had to use your full solution for success, but I now have sound again. Strange bug, hope it doesn't carry over to 8.1. -   TOTN

Hi Josh

First of all check system setting.

It seems like your modules are not loaded, if you just installed, I recommend you to
re-install Ubuntu, if this is not the case, try to run -

sudo apt-get -f install

If everything fails, try this - sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start

- I found this also helps.

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

Good luck.

Error message:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

was messing wiht chmod just once and now I can't use alsa. Have uninstalled the alsa-utils and gstreamer files and then restored alsa and gstreamer files. I want to know how to restore the permissions file for alsa so that it will access my sound card.

Really don't want to reinstall my nice Ubuntu 8.04 system.
Thank you in advance.

I have no sound with Hardy (in fact, I started with Gutsy and didn't have sound either). I can play mp3's and CDs, but at a website with sound, say, www.homestarrunner.com, I get nothing. I tried the install packages, & start alsa utils, still nothing.

I installed ubuntu about an hour ago, and sound is the only thing still not working. I'm using an Alienware m15x laptop with just an integrated intel sound card. Not sure what's wrong. Messed with all my sound settings and tried those two sude fixes, still no sound.

I tried both sudo command lines in ubuntu 8.04 and response was no such file. As stated in my original I get sound in system. I get sound when I go to generate noise however when I go to record I am not seeing the intense graph configuration as I saw in noise generate. Plus absolutely no sound on play.

Hi

I'm working with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy and always have had some problems with the sound, but after the last update I don't have any sound even at system start. At this moment I can't re-install ubuntu. I have tried with the last two suggestions but any of it are working.

When I try to switch the mute from desktop panel a message appears saying the GStreamer pluggins are not installed. I've re-installed the the gstreamer pluggins but there's no change.

Thanks for your help
