Hi,

To my understanding, you have a single telephone line but with the use of some device, this single telephone line splits to two (2), one for voice phone, one for fax only. The voice phone has its own phone number and likewise the fax machine. Your concern is when an incoming voice call rings your voice phone, when you answer it, you also hear you fax machine answering the voice call.

What this means is the device splitting your single telephone line to two is the probable culprit. You may have to consult with your phone provider. There is nothing wrong with the fax nor for that matter the telephone.

Assuming that the single telephone line is equal to two (2) telephone numbers (because of the splitter), pls try calling the fax number using the voice phone and vice-versa. If either rings then problem is elsewhere. If the number is busy, it is your telephone provider's problem.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

You could set the BT machine to manual, fax only (auto), fax/telephone or TAD/fax with one button switching between all the options.

or Call your local phone provider and ask if they provide "call block" service. Most phone providers do carry "call block" service

  • Yaz S
    Yaz S Jul 29, 2008

All you have to do is activate your call block service and it will automatically ask you if you want to block the most recent number that called you (you might not have Caller ID or be able to *69 to get the number). This way you don't have to even know the number, you can just activate the call block immediately upon receiving one of these annoying calls. Of course, if you DO have caller ID you can just access your "call block" feature and type in the number you want to block.

    Thanks for using Fixya

This should be as simple as setting your fax to receive on Fax only and setting the fax pickup to 4 or more rings.

You could also use a line discriminator for your fax line so taht calls in with no fax Request to Send tone sequence would be picked up by a regular phone on this number. The line discriminator is a Radio Shack item

Hope that helps you decide.

OK. The thing to do next is to reset your fax machine. There are two ways to do this.

    a. find in the menus the command, if any, to restore factory defaults.
    b. unplug your fax machine for 24 hours and then plug it in again.

The first option is your best bet, frankly, as suggestion number two will not unnecessarily solve your problem.

Otherwise, when you reply in this post, Tried That, please refer to the expert who offered the solution. This will help all of us to get you a solution more quickly.

Should you find that that none of these answerers are helping you you can refuse them all, close this premium post out and place it it the free forum. It nay take longer to get you going again. But, you will get more varied answers as some of our best experts only work in the free forum only.

ps Once again, try the restore factory reset in you menus.

    Tenjh,

The fact in this matter is you are greatly confused by the fact that your disticntive ring is not working correctly.

You will need to confirm with your phone carrier that you have a fax phone distinctive ring setup and not just a distinctive ring for a teen vs parents.

Otherwise, you need to purchase a phone line discriminator that will route fax calls to your fax machine and regular phone calls to your handset.

You must accept this fact, sorry. This is how these things work.I've never heard of a fax machine that had a built in phone line discriminator.

Sorry about that. A small investment in this line discriminator will solve your problem.

    Worldvet

    Hello again,

    TEL mode:

This mode is the most convenient for receiving phone calls. Faxes can also be

received; however, all calls must first be answered by picking up the fax's

handset or an extension phone connected to the same line.

    Hello again,

If desired, you can change the duration of pseudo ringing in Tel/Fax mode up to 120 seconds. Your Fax will receive fax when you are not at home.

    Hi again,

If desired, you can change the number of rings on which the fax machine

answers incoming calls in FAX and TEL/FAX mode. Any number from 2 to 5

    can be selected.

If you have a seprate number for the fax and phone, you will have two separate phone socket for the two numbers. Assuming that you connect fax machine to fax line socket and phone to phone one, Fax and Telephone they cannot interfeer with each other, as they are running on different cables and on separate sockets.

Situation: "they are on two different sockets but it is the same phone line with
two different numbers. one for the fax one for the phone but when the
phone rings it rings on both the phone and the fax machine, but if I
answer the phone the all I get is the fax noise"
The only way to fix this is to get a separate number and phone line for a fax.
All you can do is making fax machine answering time shorter, but this won't fix completely the problem.
This is the situation, if you have fax and phone on the same line you must cope with the fact that you can get some fax calls on the phone, as the fax and phone calls are being routed to both machines.

Our HP 2140 fax under distinctive ring setting DRPD was answering under our Master ring (double Ring) until yesterday it switched inside somehow where it now answers regular phone ring instead of...

Was the fax plugged into another telephone line? Maybe a power surge?

My solution would be to reconfigure the fax from scratch to learn the ring pattern.

From the Manual:

Step 1-Teach the HP Fax the ring pattern

The HP Fax will learn the ring pattern when you call it from another telephone or fax
machine.

1. Be ready to call the fax machine.
2. Press Menu repeatedly until BASIC FAX displays and press OK.
3. Use LEFT ARROW - RIGHT ARROW BUTTONS to scroll through the options until DRPD Mode displays and press OK.
Call this fax from another fax machine... Waiting Ring...
will display.
4. Call the HP Fax.

DRPD OK will display when the pattern has been learned and the HP Fax will return
to Ready mode.

Step 2-Set up distinctive ring (DRPD) answer mode

Once you have activated distinctive ring, it becomes one of the answering modes you
can select by pressing the Mode/Contrast button.

Press Mode/Contrast repeatedly until DRPD Mode appears in the display.

• In Ready mode, DRPD appears in the right hand corner of the display.
• Now, the HP Fax will manage calls and faxes as if it were set to AUTO mode
(AUTO mode on page 28)

TIP: Distinctive ring must be set up again if you reassign your fax number
or connect the machine to another telephone line. Once set up again (that
is, the fax machine has learned the ring pattern and the answering mode is
correctly set), you should test the fax machine by calling the fax number
and another number on the same line. The machine should respond
appropriately to a call placed to the fax number with fax tones, and to a
normal telephone call with the expected ring pattern.

I had been confused for the past ten months on this issue and just figured it out! Get a distinctive ring from you telephone service. If you have a answering machine, set it to answer on the 4th ring. On the fax, press menue til you get to the BASIC FAX, press OK, scroll the arrow button til you get to the DISTINCTIVE RING, press OK. Call your special fax number assigned from the telephone co, the machine should read DRPD OK, then on the face of the hp640 on the left i believe is a button called Rcv. Mode/Contrast, press that til you get to DRPD Mode, press OK. It should work great!! Hope this helps.

Setting personalized ring

Its called distintive Ring. This is the instructions from the manual -

VERY IMPORTANT
If you have Voice Mail or a TAD (Telephone Answering Device) and want to keep
one of your phone numbers dedicated only to fax calls, you must leave the fax machine
in MANUAL mode at all times while using the distinctive ring feature. Here’s why:
Manual mode will never pick up a call by itself, since it is «Neutral ». When the fax
machine is in this « neutral » mode, the Distinctive Ring Feature can be activated. The
distinctive ring feature is actually an answering mode. So, do not activate FAX ONLY
mode or FAX /TEL mode while using distinctive ring; otherwise, the fax machine will
answer calls for all the numbers.
Registering the Distinctive Ring Pattern
1
Set the fax machine to MANUAL mode.
2 Press Menu/Set, 0, 1.
3 Press to select DISTINCTIVE:SET?, and then press Menu/Set.
4 Press to select the prestored ring pattern you want to assign, and then press
Menu/Set. (You will hear each pattern as you scroll through the four patterns.)
Be sure to choose the pattern assigned by the Telephone Company.
5 Press Stop/Exit.

Audible ring has changed/machine won't answer when called

It is to do with "smart ring" feature or in your area called "distinctive ring" feature. The machine won't receive unless the ring pattern matches your distinctive ring pattern. If you are not using that feature, then you must turn the feature off. Then set your receive mode to "fax tel" mode if it is your only line.

Smart ring

Good question. I thinking your service provider (Bellsouth, Western Bell, etc..) might know this. I'm sure they have run across this before. I know that your fax machine will need to support this feature. For example, Brother Fax machines have a Distinctive Ring function on them for just this purpose. Do you have your use manual for your fax machine? It should tell you if it supports Distinctive Ring.
