We bought a canon pixma MX870 printer because it was supposed to be able to copy legal sized documents. The cassette on the one we received will not extend to handle Legal Sized paper, and the scanner bed is too small to to hold legal documents.

Some info from Canon's site in the specs:

Max. Document SizeFlatbed:8.5" x 11.7"
ADF: 8.5" x 14"

This machine can only copy legal documents if you put them in the sheet feeder, not on the flatbed.

As for the paper supply, the cassette is indeed too small for legal paper. The automatic sheet feeder, however, will handle legal paper. That's the tray in the rear that you use for specialty paper; see page 17 of the Getting Started manual.

If you use the ADF and the rear tray, you can copy legal documents. That may not be as convenient a solution as you were hoping for, but it is better than no solution at all.

How do I copy legal size paper on my canon Pixma MX49 printer

You should be able to change the printer page setup preferences before selecting the option to print.

When you have the document on the screen, go to "Print"...BUT before completing the option to print, look for the "Printer Properties" option and click on Properties......

Look for the option to change the page layout and find the option to change the paper size from Letter to Legal size paper.

Can I scan legal size paper with the Canon MP 240

Hi

You can scan the largest size of paper that will fit on the glass area of the scanner (the platten).

If your legal paper fits in this area or, at least the text printed on it fits well within the borders of platten, then you can scan it.

Your scan will show you a preview of the image scanned so you can see if all the text has been scanned from the original document before you save the scanned image on the computer or copy print it.

Legal Paper Size is: 8.5" x 14" (216mm x 356mm)

A4 Paper Size is: 210mm x 297mm

Letter Paper Size is: (8.5" x 11") 216mm X 279mm

This printer's Scanning Width is: A4/Letter

This printer's Scanning Length is: A4/Letter

I hope this helps.

I have a canon mx870 and it will not print from the cassette lower tray, even if it is set to it, it always wants to print from the rear, even if it is closed!

It may be that, if it's not the tray allocation settings causing the problem, some printer maintenance will fix this. I had this problem, after I had only had my MX870 a couple of months. Suddenly, it would not print from the cassette even when printing to standard A4 plain paper. Nor would it print from the cassette even when I changed the printer settings from 'automatic' tray selection to print always from the cassette. After seeing something online, I then ran some of the MX870 maintenance applications, first 'Cleaning', then 'Print Head Alignment', and finally 'Roller Cleaning' for the cassette rollers (for which you have to remove all paper from the cassette). The problem has been solved (at least for the moment).

We have a printer (MX870) that keeps giving us an error stating: there is no paper. There is paper in it but we cannot get it to print...it continues to give us the same error

From the service manual about the paper issue this is what it says:

***Rear tray. There is no paper. Load paper and press [OK].

Confirm that the rear tray is selected as the paper source. Set the paper in the rear tray, and press the OK button.

***Cassette. There is no paper. Load paper and press [OK].

Confirm that the cassette is selected as the paper source. Set the paper in the cassette,
and press the OK button.

Hopefully its just a setting on the printer or the computers printer properties.

Best of luck..

Scale from legal to letter

Hi,
Legal size is 11x17 inches and you cannot get a legal length document when selected for landscape.
Landscape means that it is 11 inches high and 17 inches wide.
You need to set it to letter and select 11x17 inches.
