before i tell you the problem i have few things to clarify, for your information the screen works with two components the display and the back-light , in order to see what is displayed you need the back-light (this is that you change levels as brightness), the touch screen works separately in top of display
You can't see any light in the screen what so ever (low brightness)?, when the phone is slide up and slide down state.
Go to a bright-light lamp, bring the phone close to the lamp tilt the phone slightly in either ways and see whether you can see the display (menu or icons)
if you agree with my points, you have dead screen back-light and need to be replaced,
Please contact a cell telephone repair facility in your area or your service provider. You probably cannot get the parts, you probably dont have the tools. If you start it, there will probably be no salvaging what is left of your telephone.
