Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

PS3 Question Hi, my PS3 stopped reading discs. So I took a can of air and spray inside the Blu-Ray Drive with the little red plastic tube that fits on the air canister nozzle. And, well... It got sucked in or something, but it went all the way in and I can't figure it out. Is there anyway to get it out without having to pay almost $200 to have Sony do it?

Dosn't always read disc's, games dvd's. and now has stopped reading compeatly

Hello,

The problem is that the lens/laser is weak and need to be replaced. Since it was reading disc and now it cannot read any disc anymore, that confirms the problem. To replace the laser/lens of the playstation 3. Please follow the steps below:
  1. Safely turn off the playstatiion 3,
  2. Disconnect it from the power outlet,
  3. Leave the unit to dissipate its high current in about 6 hours before starting to work on it,
  4. Open the top cover of the PS3.
  5. Pull out the power plug for the Blu-ray drive.
  6. Carefully pull up the Blu-ray drive and unclip the data cable ribbon from PS3 drive.
  7. Remove the two silver screws on top right and bottom right,
  8. Unscrew the 3 black screws to the left as well,
  9. Remove the top metal shielding of the Blu-ray drive, exposing the guts.
  10. Remove the top frame now that we are inside to reveal the laser (unscrew the screws)
  11. Once that is done you should be staring at the Blu-ray laser.
  12. Remove the Blu-ray lens screws,
  13. There are more screws to remove,
  14. There you go after removing all those screws the laser should easily come out, simply repeat the process for another working Blu-ray drive and extract its Blu-ray lens or just simply buy a replacement part (part #kem-400aaa) and insert it in the Blu-ray drive and start screwing it back on.
Hope this helped You. Thank You for using FixYa!!!

Hi there, it definitely sounds like the blu ray player. They are relatively simple to fit yourself as long as your warranty has expired. If it is still under warranty just phone Sony and they will replace it.

If you warranty has expired then you can buy a working blu ray drive on ebay for around £60. There is a circuit board that is attached to the blu ray drive, it is extremely important that you keep this as it is paired to your motherboard. Your PS3 will only work with that blu ray circuit board, no others.

To actually replace the drive is pretty easy. On the left hand side of your console there is a warranty sticker covering a little rubber bung. If your system is out of warranty peel back the sticker a little so you can remove the rubber bung. Under this rubber bung there is a small torx head screw, I think a T8 torx but a small flat blade screwdriver will take it out.

After you have removed this screw the whole top of the PS3 slides to the left and comes off. Underneath the PS3 top cover there is another plastic cover with screws all around it. As you are looking from the front of the console there is a marking on the plastic cover that points to one screw that says "S", this is a shorter screw and only goes back in that place. Remove all the screws. Just to the left of the short screw there is a small recess in the plastic casing where you have to push a little black clip back gently while lifting the cover from the back of the PS3. It should all lift forward and come off.

On the right hand side of the PS3 you will now see your blu ray drive. It lifts up but be careful, there is a ribbon cable and power cable attached to it. The ribbon cable is hidden underneath. You have to carefully lift the long black strip that is on the clips where the cable is held. This will release pressure on the ribbon cable and allow you to remove it. You will see the blu ray logic board attached to the back of the drive. Remove this from the drive taking care with a very small connector with a black and red wire, this is the optical sensor wires, remove with care!! Nowafter you have done that you are ready to replace your blu ray :)

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

The system is not reading any games

Hello there,
The reason your system is not reading any game is because the lens is not working, to fix this, follow the steps below;
  1. Unplug the power cable, video cable and controllers and remove any discs from the disc drive
  2. Remove the rubber foot on the left side of the PS3, unscrew the security screw and slide off the top lid.
  3. Unscrew all nine screws under the lid and lift off this section to reveal the inside. Be sure to unplug the cable that connects to this lid before completely removing it.
  4. Remove the gray box. This is the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the power supply and the cable connecting it to the motherboard
  5. Remove the five screws on the outside of the Blu-ray drive to remove the metal shell.
  6. Remove the next set of screws on the black plastic cover to gain access to the inside of the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the red and black cable to pull the two plastic halves apart.
  7. Remove the cables and brackets and screws holding the laser in place and slide off the laser module. Be sure to check the model number on the laser to make sure you purchase the right replacement model.
  8. Replace with new laser module, reverse your steps and reassemble the PS3.

Does not recognize there is a disc in the system whether its a game or movie

Hi, this is a very common problem with the PS3. Most of the time (at least 90%) its your laser is burned out and needs replaced. But before we assume that, lets try cleaning your laser first and see if that helps. Get a can of compressed air or an air compressor and blow out the DVD drive and see if there was anything on the lens. Then try to put a disc in and see if it plays. Sony has had alot of problems with the Blu-Ray/DVD lenses because of the Blu-Ray lens has to be so close to the disc to read it and the games, Cds, and DVDs are actually thinner and warp a little thus causing them to smack the Blu-Ray lens and eventually causing it to scratch the lens and burn out.

My ps3 stopped playing ps2 games

Hi, it sounds like your laser may be dirty or need replaced. First try to run a laser lens cleaner through it. If it won't read the cleaner, then try to blow out the DVD drive with some canned air or with an air compressor. If that dosen't help then your laser is probably burned out and needs replaced. This is a very common problem with the PS2 and PS3 systems. Remember that a PS3 has 2 lasers in it so it might still read Blu-ray discs and not anything else, but the red laser for the DVD,CD,PS1&2 games might be burned out.
