Remove starter, look a starter gear, if in good condition still, and gear moves freely lubricate shaft and gear with very light oil while spinning gear with your finger. Put starter back on and try. Good luck show your appreciation by pressing the helpful button and follow me on fixya for more tips and info.
Hi. Bendix starters have a spiral on the end of the starter motor and when the starter spins it shots the gear forward.now if the gear does not move freely then it may be dry/worn out. Lubricate with something like wd40 to free off then engine oil to lubricate it. Then allow the oil to run clear of drive and wipe clean before refitting as you do not want to spray oil on to a clutch area. Good luck.
It is not okay to run with gas in the oil ! I assume you mean the lubricating oil? If you are getting gas there you need to perform a leakdown test on the cylinder to make sure the rings are not shot, and also the intake valve seal. A compression test will not reveal this.
if the oil need frequent topping up it can only dissapear in 2 ways a leak or the engine is very worn and is burning it.
a worn engine is also a cause for oil presssure dropping once the engine has warmed up probably worn main and big end bearings on the crankshaft as you will know oil is thicker when cold so oil pressure is increased
bendix is actual the spring that pushes the gear back out of the ring gears engagement your issue is more likely a rusted /corrodied incline engagemnt gear a little lube will probably bring ti right back (do not us WD_40) this is not a lubricant it is an anti lubricant any light oil will do Good Luck
