SOURCE: Connecting my Sony Camcorder CCD-TRV 108 to my computer

To do this you will need a firewire cable 4 to 6 pin, here a link:
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin®-Firewire-Cable-4-Pin-6-Pin/dp/B0016W3L3O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1226166429&sr=8-3

you'll plug the 4 pin connector, that's the smaller one, into the DV port on the camera, then you'll plug the 6 pin into the computer's firewire port.
now open WMM, iMovie, Adobe Premire, whatever you are editing with:
imove: got to capture> video from camera, in the new one there should be a little button with a camera, just click that
WMM: Click record> from camera, then put your camera in playback mode, and hit record on WMM, start playing and BAM. same prcess for recording applies to pretty much all of them.

SOURCE: transferring video from tape to PC

Hi. I do know how to do that. You need some software that's capable of controlling the camera such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, or something like that. I believe Microsoft Movie Maker will do it and so will Roxio Media Creator which is the package they sell that burns CDs and DVDs as well. It's a whole media center.

The camera has the capability of being controlled through the firewire port on the front. You get a cable for the firewire port on the camera (firewire mini 4 pin) that goes to the computer (firewire 4 pin standard size). If you have an older computer with no firewire and it does have a PCMCIA card slot sometimes called a PC slot, or express card slot ... you can buy cards that will give it firewire ports.
You MUST have firewire to do this. The newer machines like the Acer Aspire One or any of the netbooks don't have any way to add firewire although the CPU is fast enough for video work. I capture on my old computer with firewire, and save the video to an external hard drive and edit on the netbook. Anyhow, I'm getting sidetracked!

Open your editing program and have it do a movie capture. The capture window will have buttons that look like the ones on the camera for fast forward, reverse, play, stop, etc. plus a couple for single frame reverse and forward which is useful for editing. It will also have a record button on the software. Play the tape and just as you start it, hit record. It should capture and you'll see a little data window on some software showing the frames captured and dropped during capture. That's about all there is to it. Editing is a bit trickier and I'm still learning alot of it. You can get older copies of Premiere online from a number of different sites. It's my personal favorite. It does more ... but the movie making software Microsoft provides with Windows XP and above will perform the capture perfectly well. Good luck with it.

If you have trouble, I'll be happy to get online in a chat session and talk you through it if that would help. I'm on AOL and my email is [email protected].

Sony Handicam CD-TRV128 wont accept tape

If you mean Sony CCD-TRV128 they have been obsolete for a good length of time now.
The main issue with these, back 20 years ago, was the door catch.
It gets bent from misalignment or forcing the door closed. Sometimes it can be fixed but often as it is so old, spares are no longer available.

I have a Sony Handycam Video 8 (CCD-TR610E PAL ) which uses the 8mm tape which is apparently no longer available. This has been replaced by a smaller tape DVM60. Is there a converter available so that I...

Unfortunately there is no adapter. They are different formats. 8mm is becoming hard to find. You may want to convert them 8mm tapes to at least VHS because if that 8mm camera breaks for some reason you will have to pay around $20 a tape for a conversion.

My sony Handycam video 8 ccd-trv40 will no longer record any sound. The camera will play back older tapes and their audio and video. Any suggestions?

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Sony handycam video cassette

To the best of my knowledge 8mm VTR's have not been available for some time now. On the other hand there are plenty of Hi8 cameras and players available after market. eBay is a great source. Keep in mind that Hi8 cameras and decks will also play standard 8mm video tapes.
There are also many video tape transfer services that will transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD or other formats of your choice. Just Google "videotape transfer service"

How can I view hi8 video tapes on my VCR My HI 8

VHS units are not capable of reading Hi8 video. You could have a shop transfer your recordings for a nominal service charge but if you have many tapes you may want to have your own unit repaired. You could purchase another unit second hand but be wary of doing so as the tracking could be slightly different to your own one and you would need a service centre to adjust it anyway. Best of luck!
