There are 3 ways to secure your wireless connection. You may implement more than one for additionnal security.

1. Enable encryption such as WPA or WEP. WPA is better, if your wireless router supports it. Otherwise, WEP 128-bit or more is acceptable. Only those who have the key you will set will be able to connect.

2. Disable SSID broadcast. This will prevent your wireless network from being visible when someone browse the available networks in your area. However, you will have to configure your prefered wireless network manually in your computers because they will not be able to discover your network anymore. This is a one time configuration. After disabling the SSID broadcast, change your SSID because, if you don't, the people who are currently using your wireless access without your conscent will still be able to connect because they already know the SSID.

3. Enable MAC filtering in your router. This will only allow your own computers to use the wireless connection, blocking anyone else. The down side of this restriction is that if you have a friend who bring his laptop or other wireless device to your home and wants to use your wireless connection, you will have to add its MAC address to the list in the router's configuration.

In priority, you should implement the first of the three. Look in your DI-524 manual to see how to implement those features, it is well documented.

If you lost your manual, go to http://support.dlink.com/downloads/ and choose your model. The link to the manual will be at the left of the screen.

I am visiting, using my friends wifi. I can connect to the internet, can use Explorer, I can send emails using Microsoft Office Outlook but I cannot send emails this way????

Is this an exchange account? Some ISP's (Internet Service Providers) will block the exchange ports. Try using OWA if you can.

I have a 2wire gateway modem/router and i need to reset it, but i dont have the default password located on the bottom of the modem/router because it fell off. I need to find out what the default password...

Open your Internet browser.
Type http://gateway.2wire.net/setup into the browser's address line.
You should see your key on the setup page.

Back-Up Key Codes

In most cases, you will receive a key code from your ISP. This key code is used to activate the 2Wire gateway. If you did not receive a key code, you can use the key codes provided in the following table.

If your Internet Service Provider did not provide you with

a user name, password, or IP address to set up your

Internet connection, your broadband connection most

likely uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

and you should use this key code.

If your Internet Service Provider gave you a PPPoE

username and password to set up your Internet

connection, your broadband connection uses Point-to-

Point Protocol over Ethernet and you should use this key

code.

52EU-2374-6262-22AS-B22Y

If your Internet Service Provider assigned you an IP

address to set up your Internet connection, your

broadband connection uses static IP (Internet Protocol)

and you should use this key code.

If your Internet Service Provider gave you a PPPoA

username and password to set up your Internet

connection, your broadband connection uses Point-to-

Point Protocol over ATM. In this case, you would use this

key code and Microsoft Dial-up Networking to connect to

the Internet.

I just purchased a Acer Netbook 10.1 wireless. Do I need to enter a security code in order to get on the internet.

No, you do not need to enter a security code to get on the internet. You have to use an ethernet cable to connect the wireless router to your ADSL modem. Your wireless router should first be configured with an IP address that will allow it to communicate with the modem. However, if it works you should configure a security code on your wireless router to prevent others from connecting via your wireless without permission.

Pin is basically the password of the router wep/wpa which protect the wireless router from other people to use your network or internet conenction. If you enable the wep/wpa passphase it will set security lock and will prevent other people to use your conenction.

"If your PC has not been connected to a broadband modem or other network device, you will need to
perform the PC configuration procedure below. Remember to restart each PC when finished. If your
PC has been connected to a broadband modem or other network device, continue to the “Using the
Wireless Connection” section below.
1. Start your Web browser. In the Address box, enter the following: »speedstream.
2. Press Enter. The SpeedStream Simple Setup Wizard will launch.
3. When prompted, enter the Internet connection information provided by your
Internet Service Provider.
4. At the end of the Setup Wizard, you will be given the option to either connect to
the Internet or further configure the optional settings of the gateway.
5. If additional configuration is desired, select the icon for the service or option
you wish to configure: the gateway’s firewall and security settings, User
Profiles and content filtering, or home network options."

"Using the Wireless Connection
By default, the SpeedStream® Gateway is configured to work
seamlessly with other SpeedStream® wireless products. The default
wireless interface settings are:
SSID: SpeedStream
Channel: 11
Mismatched wireless settings will prevent successful
wireless network connections between devices, so
you may need to reconfigure some wireless settings
to ensure that all settings match between wireless
devices if you are:
a) Using another manufacturer’s wireless products
b) Adding the SpeedStream® Gateway to an existing
wireless network
The Setup Wizard will walk you through setting up wireless settings."

Inside

In simple terms the internals of the router are of little physical interest -- given that I would describe a router as a computer that controls communication traffic. In the case of this specific device it can distribute an incoming internet connections to up to 4 wired devices and numerous wireless devices. Internally the routers programming can be optionally configured (generally using an internet browser). Some of the capablities include the ability to encrypt wireless communications to prevent others from using your internet connection, it can address logon/login requirement should your internet service provider require them and it can limit access to specified MAC addresses assigned to your network cards (also preventing unauthorized access). Again physically what is inside a router is of little interest to me as the changes I consider necessary are all accessible from a web browser without physically getting inside of the router.
