The problem seems to be related to static shock affecting toshiba mousepads, speaker grills, and USB ports. It's a common problem, and it is affecting my Toshiba laptop too. Here's an article I came across trying to diagnose the frequent freeze-ups:

Compaq presario 56000cl won't boot up / red light flashing in the back.

When you press the power button do you hear the fan running, hear the disk drive running, see any lights, do you hear the cd drive click once and see the light come on briefly on the cd drive door? If you see all the aforementioned then it is surely trying to boot. Computers don't boot mainly because of the following problems. 1) Bad Power Cord or Power Supply. 2) Electro Static Buildup. 3) Bad Motherboard 4) Bad boot or system files.
Remove the Power Cord and the battery if it's a laptop. Press and Hold the Power Button for 30 Seconds. Then replace only the Power Cord and try hitting the Power Button. If it boots you had an Electro Static Buildup. If you have boot or system files that are missing or corrupt normally the system will be telling you that on an error message that appears on the screen. Does your system show you anything on the screen when you press the Power Button? If not you have a Power Supply or Motherboard issue.

It sounds like you have change the password jumper setting on the motherboard. I searched toshiba and found information on how to fix your problem. Let me know if this helped or if you need more help. Please rate me mysleuth

I am having a problem with my Toshiba Satellite A135 Laptop. It will not boot up and it says Media test Failure check cable. Does this mean my hard drive went out?

Most likely, yes. First check the cabling and make sure the cables are tight on the hard drive and the motherboard. If they are, then your hard drive is bad.

My Toshiba Satellite A135 is having a bad problem. it will not boot up. It says Media test failure check cable.. Does this mean my hard drive went out?

This message is primarily seen when the PC is attempting to boot from a network, and that network connection is no longer present. The error message would read PXE-E61: Media test failure / Check computer. Is this your message?

If it is, you need to go into the BIOS, and make sure that the sequence is 1) CD-ROM 2) HDD 3) FDD (if you have a floppy) 4) LAN (if you choose to leave the LAN there). Otherwise, switch option 1 and option 2. If the problem is the hard drive, however, putting the CD-ROM first will allow you to boot from your Windows CD.

Please post back if you need further help, otherwise thank you for using and rating FixYa!

Laptop will not boot up past initial page, press F2 & F12 for boot or startup menus, says wait, never goes to menus, just sits there. Does this whether on battery or on AC power. Toshiba Satellite...

If you're trying to enter the BIOS, you can Hit & hold down the ESC, or F1 while the computer starts, and it should beep. You can see if the BIOS see's the hard drive.

The sound has gone on my Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. It started fading gradually a month or two ago and got progressively worse until I could only hear it by plugging headphones into the computer then,...

sounds like the hard ware has failed or died

try removing the sound device in device manager and when you re boot it will re install the driver

but as i said if it was gradually fading away then it will be the actual hard ware has given up
