Usually the clips of the chrome ring break and don't snap back into the frontplate. There are :Blackberry Curve Repair Guidesonline that show you how to disassemble the Curve, if need be.

Just buy a new trackball, it only costs about 7 or 8 dollars online and if you buy the proper tools instillation should be easy and you shouldnt damage your phone. There are some youtube videous on proper instillation techniques. My trackball stopped rolling to the right so I ordered a new one, buying a new phone is way more expensive than switching out the parts. Good luck!

I had to take mine off the other day to reinsert after the right motion wasn't working. To remove the unit, carefully lift up on the ring around the track ball. Inspect the bottom of the trackball for any damage to the small black rollers on the bottom of the unit. If the rollers are there, make sure they line up on top of the little chips.

I have a Curve. Have never lost my trackball but have lost control. You can bypass usage of it by tapping menu, hitting S twice. I am researching from there. The problem with the trackball is a mistake that they admit to but too late to do anything about and since it isn't life threatening or hasn't been called in to BBB or something, not much can be done. If you want more info, I can get it for you.
