Akai LCD 32"

Hi,
A friend from work had this 32" Akai LCD that stopped working and told me that if I could fix it I could have it. I said yes but I really don't know how exactly to fix it. I have the tools, but I'm not familiar with tvs. Plugged into an outlet the red standby light is on. Pusing the standby button on the side causes the light to go green for abou 5 seconds before it goes back to red. No picture shows and no sound other than a very faint whining noise. I don't think the noise is coming from the speakers. It sounds almost like it is coming from the circuit board connected to the power cord. Is that possible?? What is a possible solution?? Thanks in advance for anything you have to offer!

There is no blinking at all when it is red or green. And I just noticed that the faint whine starts right as the light turns back to red ( if that means anything... )

Any suggestions or solutions yet? I think I'm going to start yanking some of the circuit boards to see if I can find anything. I emailed Akai 3 days ago but still have heard anything back from them either.

I've have fixed a few hundreds of the power supplies for these LCDs.
Base on the info you provided, it appears like the power supply needs to be repair. Visually inspect the capacitors and check the ones in between the heatsinks HS3 and HS4, normally they become defective.
If you are unable to DIY, Iet me know.

Hi,

Based on your description, it is the internal protection circuitry triggering the unit OFF hence the 5 seconds green then red. Having both no picture and sound indicates the major B+ missing, no pulsating red could indicate problem not to be on the load side. Having said this, then problem could be limited to the power supply board (most likely) or any of the filter capacitors of the load side (least likely).

  • Audible whine with low voltage on one or more outputs - shorted semiconductors, faulty regulator circuitry resulting in overvoltage crowbar kicking in, faulty overvoltage sensing circuit or SCR, faulty controller.
  • Periodic power cycling, tweet-tweet, flub-flub, blinking power light - shorted semiconductors, faulty over voltage or over current sensing components, bad controller.
In most cases, bad solder connection (cold or loose solder) is a possibility as well since there are usually large power components in these supplies and re soldering their pins may be required. An excessive load can also result in most of these symptoms or may be the original cause of the failure.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello,
Hopefully due to a short-circuit or a power surge, theres a fault IC or resistor in the board which when replaced will automatically solve the problem for you!!.. Probably C242 0.47µ 63v This could be the one to be replaced...But im not sure but make sure you check this IC first..thank you!!...

Locate the big mains smoothing capacitor (near the mains input usually) its often 40uf-220uf 400v on 240v mains.
Switch on and test the voltage across this capacitor and expect 300volts or more (320v average uk) or 1.414 times the mains RMS voltage

Lct3201ad power supply - plz let me know how much

The AKAI LCT3201AD I got from a friend who didn't know it was stuck in stand by. Took it to the local TV repair guy who charged me $25 deposit to check it out and replaced the power supply for $99 total. Works good except for DVD player that won't eject. Just need to figure out what bolts are to be used for mounting to the wall.

My akai just stopped working no sound no picture no blinking lights, what can be wrong?

Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.

AKAI LCT3201AD Tv will not stay on when you turn it on the light changes to green and then in about 10 seconds turns red again. TV is 1 1/2 years old. For awhile we were able to unplug it and plug it back...

I have just repaired one of these sets for the 2nd time. The problem is definitely the Capacitors on the Main Power Supply Board. If you are handy, you could replace them yourself, or You can send your board to me and I will make the repair for you. Akai initially used what I feel are sub-standard Capacitors on these boards, and I have found that by replacing most of them, this problem can be eliminated. My email address for repairs is Lakers4life42@yahoo.com
