Vista Operating System - Forgotten Password

My son bought a used laptop. The guy he bought it from cleaned it up so that it didn't have any of his personal information, but goofed up some driver/file for the CD drive. I called Toshiba and they walked me thru a restore. Now when the computer starts it wants the former owners password. I've tried starting in safe mode and that doesn't work for VISTA. I've gone into the setup utility - security and there are only two options listed: Set User Password and Set Supervisor Password. I don't know which one to use or if I need to use either one. Can somebody help?

Need to open laptop to reset password

If it is just the Windows password you can reset it following this procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/change-your-forgotten-windows-password-with-the-linux-system-rescue-cd/

If it is the BIOS password then you need to tell us what is your computer brand and model.

Thank you.

Forgot windows 7 password how do I unlock it ?

I believe probably the easiest and safest way for you is remove your Windows OS Passwords with Windows Password Recovery tools. I found a good one at http://www.reset-windows-password.com last week, and then I downloaded it and used it to remove the lost password within only few minutes. Furthermore, the powerful tool didn't cause a little data lose. It's worth an attempt.

If this is a user account you are talking about, just log in as Administrator and re-set it. (If you didn't specify a password for the Administrator account when the machine was set up, then leave the password field blank.) If this is the Administrator account you are talking about, it gets a bit tricker. See these for more direction:

My sons Aspire 5720 laptop

Well there are 2 ways that this may be rectified the easy way and the hard way , for the easy way to work lets just hope your son didnt change all the security

EASY WAY::
When the logon screen appears (where you select which user account you want to use)
HOLD Ctrl + ALT and press DELETE
this whill change the screen and a box will appear where you can type a use name and password
For the username enter Administrator and leave the password balnk, hit enter and hope it works.. If it does go to the control panel and delete the administrator account he creadted or just delete the password or change it.

If that Fails AND YOU HAVE ANOTHER ACCONT IN WHICH TO GAIN SYSTEM AXCESS Use SYSTEM RESTORE in in choose
Start all programs , axcessories , system tools , system restore
For Vista
Click start and in the Start search box type restore
scroll down the box that appers and click system restore, Restore the computer to a time in which you actually remeber the password before he changed it or before he made any changes..

HARD WAY::
If it didnt Prepare for the hard Way... :(
this will depend on which operating system you are using,
This depeds primilary on doftware to do it for you

WINDOWS XP

Password

You can try booting in the safemode to see whether the default administrator account is enabled. If it is there then log on to the administrator account and changed the password for the account.

If the administrator account is not enabled then you should have the Vista disc to do system restore. Boot the computer from the Windows VIsta disc.. when you see the setup screen look for Repair your computer link at the left bottom corner. Click that follow the instruction to do system restore.

IF you dont have the vista disc call you Acer support to find how to boot in to Win RE

Good luck
