Question about Gateway PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Gateway Laptop, Model #MX6440, S.N. # T3564l1011218. I need an installation CD for MS Office that matches the one originally included that was lost. MS tells me I need this before I can install Powerpoint, which was offered with Office, but not included. I can not get Powerpoint, though I seem to have the other Office components. I only need to read Powerpoint, not necessarily create it. MS says if I get the CD they will provide the code # to get Powerpoint.Questions 239-348-8115 or mbrown5785@aol.com

Can i use my emachine recovery disk on my gateway after i install a new hard drive on my gateway?

No, you can't. (Well, it might be possible, but very unlikely, that it would work.) Recovery discs are made for specific machines. There are a couple of reasons why the discs for one system can't be used for another brand or model.

In addition to installing the operating system (Windows), recovery discs also include drivers for the machine's included hardware (video, sound, media card slots, etc.). The drivers on the recovery disc for an eMachines system won't have what a Gateway system needs, unless they were built using exactly the same motherboard and other parts, which would be quite unusual. If wrong hardware drivers are installed, Windows may not start and give you the famous "blue screen of death". Or Windows will start, then begin finding new hardware and asking you for drivers you won't have (although you could find them at the Gateway website). The discs also include the applications the manufacturer preloaded on the system. Some of these may not work and cause problems because of the hardware differences (a sound control program with the wrong sound hardware, for instance).

The other reason is that a restore disc also includes information that gets placed into Windows so the system comes up already activated and ready to go. Activation is based on information about the hardware configuration of the system, and yours won't be correct. Windows will see the this and you'll need to activate manually. If the Windows version on the eMachines recovery disc isn't exactly the same as the one on the Gateway, the product key on the computer won't work when you try activation.

Rather than try using the wrong recovery disc, see if you can borrow or download the installation disc for the Windows version specified on the product key sticker on the Gateway. Then you can do a clean new Windows installation and activate it using the product key. You can find the drivers your computer needs at Gateway's website as I mentioned before. It's more work than just running the recovery disc, but it will work. This does mean the system won't have any of the preloaded applications originally on the computer when you're finished. But this is not a bad thing.

Much of the preloaded stuff on a new computer is often called "bloatware", which you really don't need. It just slows the computer down, uses up Windows resources, and may be gathering information and sending it to sites behind your back. You can find good free programs to do anything originally installed and install only what you really need and want. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

CD/DVD burning: CDBurnerXP
Antivirus: AVG, Avast!
Audio processing: Audacity
Image processing: GIMP
Office suite: OpenOffice

Good luck getting the system back up and running. Thanks for using Fixya!

Tip

Change MS-Office key

1.Locate your valid product CD Key, which is located on the back of the original CD case.

2.On the Start menu, click Run.

3.In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.

4.In Registry Editor, find the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice.0RegistrationClick the plus sign (+) next to this folder. If you see only one subkey in this folder that has a 32-character {GUID} (globally unique identifier), select that subkey and go to step 5.
If you see more than one subkey that has a 32-character {GUID}, select each one until you find the one whose DisplayName value (in the right pane) matches your version of Office.

5.For the selected {GUID} subkey, select the ProductID string value in the right pane.

6.On the Edit menu, click Rename.

7.Type
OldProductID
and then press ENTER.

8.On the Registry menu, click Exit.

9.Start any Office program.

10.When the Microsoft Office XP User Information dialog box appears, type your valid product CD Key (located on the back of the CD case). Follow the instructions on your screen.
"If you open MS Word and it does not ask you for a CD Key, go to step 11."
Return to step 4, select the Registration folder.
Right click Registration folder and select rename.
Type OldRegistration and press enter.
Follow steps 8 - 10.

Where can i download Microsoft word 2007?

You cannot download it.
If you do not have your MS Word installation CD and the product installation key, then you can't install MS Word.
You will need to purchase a copy of MS Office which includes MS Word.

OPEN OFFICE is a full-featured office suite that's compatible with Microsoft Office.
If you want Open Office you can download this free program.

How to install ms word

Installing MS Word is a simple task, and can be done by anyone, withjust a little bit of knowledge about Microsoft's installation procedures. First, Turn on your computer and login to Windows. Insert yourMicrosoft Word CD into your computer's CD tray and wait for the autorun promptto start. If autorun does not work, open Windows Explorer, browse to your CDdrive, and double click on the setup.exe file. Enter your license key whenprompted. Your license key can be found either on your CD jewel case orslipcover, or on the box that your copy of Microsoft Office came in. Click on "Installation" and click the "Next"button, and the installation will commence. Remove the CD from your CD trayonce the installation has finished, and click the "Finish" button onthe installation window. You may be asked to reboot your computer. If so,restart your computer. Double click on the Microsoft Word icon that is on your desktop tostart the program, and enter in any registration or license information that isrequested.

I have a gateway computer with microsoft excel. To setup, I need a product key number. The number on the back of my computer does not work. It shows invalid number when typed in. How can I fix this...

All original buys come with the installation CD's of Microsoft Office as well as the OS, check the cover of that CD. If you are unable to find it you can contact gateway and let them know the S/N of your computer and they might help you.
You are trying to put in the OS numbers into the office installation this will not work. You need Microsoft Office keys, please refer to the place you bought it.
Thanks
