Question about HP Computers & Internet

4 Answers

My Compaq Presario 2100 frequently overheats and turns itself off. It has had this problem for quite some time, but the frequency is increasing. I have tried the online help and support but the page comes up in Japanese (I live in Japan, but bought the computer in the USA -- I can't read Japanese!) I would appreciate help, either with my overheating problem, or getting HP Help and Support in English.

I have already tried keeping the dust off of all parts, but that does not help.

  • PgsPatriciaG Jul 30, 2008

Yes, I use compressed air to clean all parts.

  • PgsPatriciaG Jul 30, 2008

Thanks, but there is plenty of circulation space on all sides of the computer.

Hello PgsPatriciaG,

Make sure that when you are using the laptop. you aer not blocking the ventilation holes.
If for example you use your laptop right in front of a wall, try moving it some inches away from it.

Try removing dusts from your heatsink and your fan including the grills of the computer case. you may use a small paint brush or better if you have a small PC vaccum cleaner.

good luck, hope this helps.

As the airflow gets blocked the overheating will happen more and more easyly.

Use compressed air in the ventalation holes while the laptop is turned off to blow all the dust out.

  • Ekse Jul 29, 2008

local computer repair shops etc, can take the laptop apart and do a better cleaning job inside, I suppose you could also do that but only at your own risk, you would have to take the laptop apart and clean the fans, and blow all the dust out from the interior, the compressed air should be able todo the job, but a full cleaning is always better.

Disable the automatic restart on system failure

Disabling the Automatic Restart option in Windows XP

    1. Navigate to the Control Panel in Windows XP by left-clicking on Start, followed by Settings and then choosing Control Panel.

    2. In the Control Panel window, open System.
Note: In Microsoft Windows XP, depending on how your operating system is setup, you may not see the System icon. To correct this, click on the link on the left-hand side of the Control Panel window that says Switch to Classic View.

    3. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.

    4. Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.

    5. In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.

    6. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.

    7. Click OK in the System Properties window.

    8. From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. Rebooting manually will be necessary.

My compaq presario 2100 will not start up the power cord plugs in and when you wiggle it it somtimes would work but now wont at all. thank

1. You possibly have a damage ac cord
or you have damaged connecting plug at the PC .
2. try to obtain a new AC cord.
3. Another possibility is the power supply for the PC needs replacement.
4. A PC technician can determine this for you.
Contact Compaq for repair rates because most likely this is a special power supplied system.

I could not find a driver for presario 2100 a compaq branch.

Which driver are you looking for? Which laptop version do you have? I notice that the HP site has several different 2100 models.

You can try this site:

From what I can tell is that the CPU fan is the problem. The CPU fan is probably what is whining right now, so if you want you can try and replace it. Also if it shuts down frequently, that's probably because the CPU fan isn't cooling your processor adequately, so the processor overheats, and the computer shuts itself down automatically.
