Acer Aspire 5741 battery only charges to 78% although it is only 6 months old.

Do you still have the old battery. If so charge it, and see if it charges properly. If so then you have a bad battery.

how long will it hold charge if it does not hold charge for very long and it takes a long time to charge you need a new one

OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If you take out your battery, plug it in, then turn your laptop on it should still run. If it does run then your battery is bad. If it does not run then it is either your DC jack or charger.
