Question about Gateway 7405GX Notebook
My Gateway 7405 GX fully shuts down at random intervals. Just before it shuts down a fan seems to rev up, then it powers down. The fan gives me a 3 second warning... I have cleaned the inside from dust... I have no idea whats making the fan trip into overdrive...
It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.

I had this problem on my Gateway 7405 for about a week. Based on the solutions I found including xalint1's solution I removed the heatsink/fan assembly and found that the heat sink compound had gone hard. I cleaned it off and applied new compound I had and so far no shut downs. I also down loaded "Core Temp.exe " and monitor temperature, it seems to run between 34C and 48C
