Gateway 7405 GX Fully shuts down at random intervals

My Gateway 7405 GX fully shuts down at random intervals. Just before it shuts down a fan seems to rev up, then it powers down. The fan gives me a 3 second warning... I have cleaned the inside from dust... I have no idea whats making the fan trip into overdrive...

same here. I sent mine into gateway over and over then they finally sent me a new one...now it is doing the same thing. Cant be heat as sometimes it does it right after turning on while very cool. Always the same running just fine fan revs. to super high then.....click. Could be after 30 seconds or after 6 hours. totally random. only thing I have found to not have it happen is to run only on battery. Seems to not do it while on battery.

It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.

I had this problem on my Gateway 7405 for about a week. Based on the solutions I found including xalint1's solution I removed the heatsink/fan assembly and found that the heat sink compound had gone hard. I cleaned it off and applied new compound I had and so far no shut downs. I also down loaded "Core Temp.exe " and monitor temperature, it seems to run between 34C and 48C

That means the computer is in 'Sleep' mode. To completely shut down the laptop, you can press the power button once and it will do a normal shut down.
Good luck!

How can i tell if the fan on my vaio CS31S isnt working properly? It seems to speed up and down and the laptop shuts down? Is it te fan or could there be another reason for this shutdown? :-)

Try blowing out any dust from around the fan with compressed air. If the fan is turning on and off a lot, this could be normal, depending on your processor, but if the system just shuts down fully and randomly, it would be a heat issue. The CPU is overheating and the failsafe mechanism is to instantly shut your computer down. The only way to avoid this is to raise the CPU shutdown temp in the BIOS settings, or if you can access the CPU, remove it and apply new, quality thermal grease. Also, ensure the fan is operating correctly during use and dont block any air intake or exhaust ports.

My Gateway 7405 randomly shuts down. It does not matter how long it has been running for. It has shutdown during bootup and after running for many hours. Just before it shutsdown the fan accelerates to...

You might try changing the Power Options (its in the Control Panel) Properties so that all windows are set to NEVER. That is, so that it will never automatically turn off monitor, hard disks or go to standby. Also turn off all the alarms. This worked for my Presario R3000 running WinXP Sp2 which would shut off for no apparent reason. Having said that, you should blow out your fan with compressed air occasionally. And check that your power cord is OK. When you pull out your power cord, the battery icon should show operation.

Gateway 7426 GX shuts down randomly after fan revs for a few seconds. Sometimes it can run all day fine and then bam!, does seem to happen when I am actively working or have many programs running at once....

This seems to be a motherboard related issue. I am having the same problems. Some speculate that it is something to do with the cpu throttling causing the cpu to think it's going to overheat and so it shuts off. Others think it's a faulty cpu temp sensor. If you keep the laptop idle (no intense video applications), then it won't do it, but that makes it very useless. Also, make sure both fans work as the system has 2 inside. One seized and ruined one 7426 on me so I got another for cheap and now it's happening.

I have a dell GX 270 that has orange light on mother board, shuts down randomly, seems hot, and says Alert! System battery voltage is low. The fan is running but doesn't kick out much air..

The battery message means you need to change the battery on the motherboard, it looks like a coin about the size of a nickel. Which fan is malfunctioning, the power supply fan, the case fan, or the processor fan?

My computer just seems to shut off, maybe it is overheating but the fans seem to be working.

if your computer is randomly keeps on shutting down this is a thermal issue which you need to address. check airvents, use compressed air to clean all possible obstructions between heatsink fan and processor. try avoiding blocking the airvent of your notebook. try also updating your bios
