Canon fax problem

I have no filters anywhere. The phone line to the fax goes through the same modem used by the line to my DSL server.

Bubbabear's suggestion didn't help me solve my problem, but pressing "hook" on the fax machine allowed me to hear a dial tone, whereas, plugging the phone line into another outlet did not reveal any dial tone. In addition, through an extremely loud noise I could barely hear the automated voice that told me to "try your call again later". I'm very confused!

The DSL modem is plugged into the incoming phone line and the "line" plug of my MF machine and into the "internet" plug on my broadband router. Do you think the DSL plug on my modem may be faulty?

Unless that phone line is filtered in a back room somewhere, that could be the reason why it isn't working. The best way to find out is to put your fax machine onto on hook dial mode and listen for the tone. If you don't hear one, your fax line isn't filtered and needs a filter in order to use the line for faxing.

Can canon mf4370 fax on dsl line

Fax machine operation can be interrupted by DSL lines, however, because the DSL signal is also transmitted through phone wiring. This can result in a loss of data in the fax if steps are not taken to prevent it. Fortunately, this is not a difficult thing to fix.

Items you will need

  • DSL filter
Step 1

Unplug the fax machine from the phone jack.
Step 2

Plug your DSL filter into the phone jack. DSL filters are specifically designed to eliminate interference from the DSL line on your phone line.
Step 3

Plug the fax machine into the phone line jack on the DSL filter. You can now use your fax machine and DSL line at the same time without risk of data loss or interference.

do you have a filter on the line? usually, you need a filter to keep the phone and data sides separate. Fax machines are generally treated as phone devices. If you are in the US, ask around, chances are somebody has a filter you can use, I know I've probably got half a dozen in a box somewhere from every time I've had dsl set up.

I've changed my internet providers and have gone from a cable internet svc to a dsl phone line provider. Now my computer fax machine says it is offline. Is there a setting that I need to change?

Most likely cause is you don't have a dsl filter on your fax line. Without the filter, your fax machine's modem can't discern between a dsl signal and a telephone signal Since the telephone line coming into the building is now carrying a dsl signal, a filter is necessary to receive/send faxes.

My DSL constantly loses sync after it has been on for awhile

If you have telephone devices (e.g phones, fax) sharing with your DSL line, be sure it has DSL filter on devices so it won't interfere with the internet connection. If every devices is properly filtered, disconnect all devices sharing with your DSL line and leave the modem connected to the phone socket with 3 meters phone cable and observe the connection. If the connection becomes stable, connect each devices so you will identify of these devices is using a faulty filter.

I lost my manual and would like help in connecting to phone jack

Each phone or dial-up modem or fax machine needs a DSL filter attached to the phone line/socket then each phone or dial-up or fax machine is then plugged into this filter.
The DSL modem does not require a filter.
If your fax is part of the computer's modem then a filter is also required on the line-in on the modem.
The instructions for sending & receiving depends upon your system/dial-up modem (the make & model, is it stand alone or a modem adapter on the expansion slot or built-in on the motherboard) and the software you are using. Cannot help you without these details.

Phones will not release hold when picking up on a different phone

Make sure you have filters on the lines between your DSL and your phones. Use the line out from the back of your modem to split to your phones if you don't have any filters. You may have to take line 2 from the back of the DSL modem to send to all of the phones. This is usually a filtered source and should isolate your phones from the DSL. Put the filter on any other devices that are sharing line 2 too, fax, computer, credit card machine etc.

No filter

There you go. Stop by Radio Shack and pick up a DSL filter and hook it up to the wall outlet of your fax machine. If the DSL modem is next to your fax machine, plug the fax machine into the outlet marked as phone.

I just got done doing this to both of my offices. Typically the phone company will use your fax line to piggyback the DSL. All you have to do is make sure your DSL modem output goes to the fax line either through the wiring block in your office or directly to the back of the modem itself.

That way you won't need the filter.

Connecting

jon, I am assuming you have DSL modem. Sending a fax by DSL requires one of two methods: 1. You obtain a DSL line filter suitable for connecting a standard voice telephone to the DSL line, then connect an analog fax modem to the line through the line filter. Good Luck, Tim
