Yes, the DRUM UNIT has reached the end of its life and must be replaced. You can order a new one from BROTHER,or a local office supply store may have it in stock. It is easy to replace, instructions are included, and when the new one is installed, the DRUM ERROR LIGHT will turn off , and the machine will be ready to use.

Hello, you need to reset the Drum Unit life:
After changing a DR2000 drum unit in a Brother HL-2040, the printer's page count needs to be reset. This will turn off the drum warning light on the printer.
Simply open the front cover, and hold the "GO" button until all four LED's are lit. Release the "GO" button and close the front cover.
you can reset your drum by opening the front cover and then press the resume buttom until all the LED light up...then release the button and close back the front cover... you can check your printer setting by press 3 times the resume button... tap, tap, tap, and it will print a copy of setting page for u..
Have you already replaced the drum? If you have not replaced the drum that may be why you are getting smudges. If you have already replaced the drum, here is the reset procedure.
The Drum LED blinks if the drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one.
The Drum LED continues to blink if the drum counter was not reset when you replaced the drum. To reset the drum follow the instructions below:
Open the front cover of the printer.
Press and hold down Go button for about 4 seconds until al the LEDs light up. Once all 4 LEDs are lit, release the Go button.
Close the front cover.
CautionReset the drum counter only when you replaced the drum unit with a new one.Related Models
