Question about Paxar Monarch 9850 Thermal Printer

Error code 754

The printer is showing error code 754 check ribbon. I replaced the ribbon to no luck and I made sure that the used ribbon spool was tight. I have tried to unplug it for a few minutes to clear the error, but no luck.

It's very possible you are not installing the ribbon properly.
When loading a new ribbon on a Monarch printer, you must save the plastic ribbon core (it's butter yellow in color) from the previous roll of ribbon. The core is what the ribbon is wound up on.
Do not throw away this plastic core - you need it for the next roll of ribbon you load!
You have to move this now empty core from the back ribbon spindle and slide it on the front ribbon spindle. You then load the new ribbon on the back spindle and attach the ribbon end to the empty plastic ribbon core on the front spindle.
You CAN NOT just tape the ribbon to the front spindle. You must have an empty ribbon core to attach the new ribbon to. The printer will give a 754 error unless you have two plastic cores on the two spindles. It can also give a 754 error if the ribbon is not loaded properly, and also if you have a bad motherboard. There are no ribbon sensors, so that's never going to be a problem...

Surely the ribbon sensor is dirty and needs to be cleaned, it is necessary to uncover and clean the equipment. This is where you put down the new ribbon.

Printer given barcode missing install new ribbon


There are two styles of P7000 a spool ribbon style and a cartridge ribbon style. You are getting a barcode error then your printer is looking for a ribbon spool not a ribbon cartridge.

Cartridge Ribbon:

Printer will only print on cd at a time before it errors


When this occurs it means the spools have been mismatched. When you change the tfr ribbon you MUST change the color ribbon at the same time. If you change the color ribbon only and still want to use the unused part of the previous set the sensors lose count one at a time. The only way to correct this is to install two new fresh spools and every time the error comes up simply unlock the door and open and close it quickly until the unit continues on its own again meaning the print quantities now match again. Simple tip is to make sure and always replace both spools every time.

Ink-ribbon error


The problem you are having is the unit uses various cartridges that the ink spools must match. You must have the correct cartridge with the ribbon you are using or you will get that error message. There are three types available from the manufacturer. P+ for the Photo ribbon, The Color Insignia for the Color Ribbon and the Versamax brand ribbon although i don't recall what the symbol is on that one. If you are trying to load a spool of Photo ribbon on a color spool that message occurs. Hope this explains everything.

One label prints, then red light comes on. We


Solid red light. This indicates the printer is in an error state and will not print until the error is cleared. Check to make sure the printer is not out of labels or out of ribbon if it is a TLP model.
A solid red light will occur if
  • the printer is out of labels
  • the printer is out of ribbon ( TLP models only )
  • the printhead is open, not latched down all the way. Press down on the top cover of the printer to see if the error light clears and goes to green.
  • the ribbon spool is slipping on the ribbon spool holder on TLP models:

Ribbon Error, ribbon roll seems sloppy


I hope this information will help. If you have the manual, can you check and make sure that the ribbon is threaded through the right path. Question, when the printer prints is there an image of the data on the ribbon when it spools onto the ribbon takeup spool? If so, the ribbon may be installed backwards. I'm sure you know what you are doing but one must check even the smallest detail when trying to solve these strange problems. If the ribbon is installed correctly and there is no image of the data on the ribbon you may be dealing with a bad printhead and the printhead needs to be replaced.

Yes, it does require a take up reel or core. It should look the same as the one that is in the core of the ribbon spool.

You can order these from the manufacturer. Please note the width of your ribbon, as there may be more than one core width for sale for this model.
