I believe that the Laars Lite 2 heaters are a millivolt system . There is a thermopile in the pilot assembly that produces about 500 millivolts DC. This is the power that the gas valve uses to turn on. These pool heaters are notorious for getting resistive connections that restrict the flow of electricity through the circuit. A connection that looses 1/4 volt is no big deal with 110v but in a millivolt system that is half of your power. Start by checking the output of the thermopile then go through the entire circuit and clean every connection with sandpaper. usually this will fix it but if not then you will need to isolate each individual component to find out what is not passing power.
Good Luck,

Hi there

On these heaters there are a number of safety cut out switches and some are not obvious,
1. If fitted I guess they have changed the thermocouple ( this sits in the pilot flame and connects to the gas valve) if they have changed the gas valve.
2. There is normally a control link to the heater to prevent it starting if the pump is not running or the pressure is too low. This is usually a wire that runs through the pump motor overload(if fitted) and the inlet or outlet water pressure switches ( if both fitted) and then to the time clock (again if fitted) and to the thermosts on the heater.

I hope this helps, but please come back to me if you need more info

Gordon

How do I know if the pilot is lit on my heater? Can I light it myself?

Hello
You should be able to see it.There is a small flame in the bottom of the fire box at the end of the gas line tube inside the heater.

Also the gas valve will be turned to on.There are 3 positons on the gas valve, off pilot and on.
If the pilot lite is not lit the valve will be in the pilot or off positon.Plus if it were on and not lit you will smell gas.

Yes you can lite it.Follow instructions on side of heater on how to lite pilot.

I have an older Teledyne Laars EPS Gold Series One pool heater. About a year ago, I had a new Jandy igniter installed. Now, the pilot light goes on and simply burns -- it does not ignite the full burners...

You need to see what what pressure is required to turn the heater on. If you don't have enough flow or pressue, the heater will not ignite. Was it working before?

The pilot is not proving to the control.Check that there is a GROUND/EARTH stake to the pool heater in the dirt. The pilot assembly needs a ground wire too the control.

I know all too well what the issue is. Sometimes it self corrects and sometimes not - then you take apart the top side of your heater and pull the manifold/tubes. There are rubber gaskets that probably dried out over the winter. You can try to just tighten the manifold cast iron headers to the tube flange but, if you have it this far, just install the new gaskets. Teledyne Laars sells them in a pack of 18.

Unit will try three times to start then shut down

Make sure the exhaust fan is running. You say it fires up and then cut off.Does the main burner come on just the pilot? If it's just the pilot then I would say you need to replace sense that senser the pilot lite.Because onces that senser the flame the main gas vavle should open.for give me for my mis spelling.

I have converted by Teledyne Laars pool heater model EC 125 to LP gas, the system will not turn on, wondering if I need to change the ignitor system

did you also change out the oriface to the pilot assembly. you have to do that, also do you have a manometer (preferably digital) to check the gas pressure on theinlet and outlet of the gas valve? do this and set it up to the manfacture's recommendations and you should be good to go. Thanks for using Fixya and Merry Christmas!!

My pool heater pilot will not stay lite. I can hold down the pilot button and soon as I release it the pilot will go out. Please help!

Ok a couple things to check here would be a thermocouple or a flame switch depending on the the type of ignition source. If it has a standing (continious) pilot you need to look for a small copper line returning from the pilot source to the gas valve most likley this will be it. The other will be a small copper line returning to a switch with 2 wires on the backside this will be a flame switch. the thermocouple could most likley be purchased from your local hardware store but a flame switch will have to come from the heater manufacturer.
