External hard drives are portable storage devices you can use to back up files or transfer content from one computer to another quickly and safely.

While external hard drives vary in design and storage capacity, turning them off properly is ideal because it decreases the chances of damaging or corrupting files.

Whether you are using Windows or Mac OS X, you can safely eject and turn off your external hard drive in minutes.

Safely eject your external hard drive before turning it off if you have connected it to your computer.

To do so, click the "Safely remove hardware" icon on the system tray on the taskbar. T
he hardware window launches.

Click your external hard drive's icon in the hardware window and click the "Stop" button. You should see the "This device can now be safely removed from your computer" dialog message.

Press the "Power" button to turn off your external hard drive.
Some external hard drives turn off automatically when you safely eject them.

Right-click your external hard drive's icon on the desktop if you are using a Mac, and then click "Eject."

Alternatively, drag your external hard drive's icon from the desktop to the "Trash" bin.
You should no longer see your hard drive on the desktop.

Press the "Power" button to turn off your external hard drive

Fash drive virus

Insert your USB drive in the appropriate USB slot in your computer.
If the Autoplay dialog box appears, select "Take No Action" and click the "OK" button.
Launch your anti-virus program, such as AVG Antivirus or Anti Malware.
Select the USB drive for the program to scan.
Click the "Start Scan" button or option.
Open the scan history for the USB drive when the scan is complete to see a list of viruses and warnings identified by the antivirus software.
If desired, select the options to "Heal All Infected Files" or "Move the Infected Files to the Virus Vault" to ensure these files are quarantined from your system.
Highlight each infected file in the scan history.
Write down the file name of each infected file identified on the USB drive.
Minimize the application's window.
Select "Run" from the Windows "Start" menu. In the Run window, type "e:/" at the command prompt to switch to your USB drive (or type the drive letter for your USB drive).
Press the Enter key.
Type "attrib -s -h -r -a *.*" at the command prompt to remove the system, hidden, read-only and archive file attributes.
Press the Enter key.
Type "del ####.+++" where "####" is the file name of the infected file and "+++" is the file extension, at the command prompt line.
Press the Enter key.
For example, "del terriblevirus.exe" will specifically delete the Terrible Virus executable file. Repeat for each infected file on your list identified.
Close the command prompt window; that is, exit the Run utility.
Maximize the window for your anti-virus program (which is still open) and repeat Steps until no virus is detected on your USB drive.
Exit the anti-virus application.

or Click start click on my computer you should see your usb drive right click then select format.
another way is to control panel administrative tools computer management disk management Right Click on your drive select format

Drive won't boot

Thry this: turn your computer OFF. Gently unplug and replace the data cable connection to the computer several times. Do the same to the drive end of the cable. Leave one end unplugged. Turn on the computer and when the Mac os is set up and waiting for you, plug the drive in and see if the computer recognizes and reads the drive. The problem is usually corrosion on the contacts that prevent proper contact.

Computer not recognizing it

if as you say its working fine is pc accessing drive via usb and have you set the jumper to master as most external enclosures work on the device being master if you can see the hdd on pc then the laptop needs to have windows re-installed but if the pc is not showing hdd then goto control pannel and Administrative Tools and Computer Management and then Disk Management if showing here then select unallacated drive and properties and set active. then turn of drive then turn back on and see if comes up in my computer. only do laptop if pc has hdd viewing in my computer. hope all goes well
