Sounds like the battery has been left on charge too long not holding a charge causing the battery to go bad. also try cleaning the contacts on the batter and on the unit itself see if there is any rust or anything not of the norm to be wiped off.
also if you have a model number further troubleshooting would be easyer.
just fishing out of the air for you at the moment.

Q: How long does it take to attain a full charge? Is there an indicator on the unit stating that it's fully charged?
A: I estimate that the 1st charge took about 12 hours since there is nothing on the unit to tell when it is fully charged.
Q: What is red light for? Stayed lit all the time for first charge. Now only lights when I shake the cord.
A: It is pretty much an indicator that the device is undergoing charge but does NOT turn colors i.e. does NOT turn to green once fully charged. Think of it as an operating light, it lights up when undergoing charge and that's about it.

Try the battery in another Ryobi to see if it works.
If it does not work it may have been effected when the trimmer burnt out.
time to buy a new battery.
The flashing green indicator is telling you (and the notebook) that the battery is almost fully charged, but then by switching immediately to flashing orange, the status has changed to "battery charge is low". This is not normal behaviour and probably indicates a serious issue with the battery. My guess is that the charging is initiating some kind of rapid battery self-discharge. Ref - Knowledge Base
Notebooks will power up and work without a battery just fine. Ref - Laptop Battery Basics dummies Try to operate yours this way. This will eliminate the battery from the loop as a potential cause of the BSODs you are seeing.
This model is several years old...probably about 7 years old and the battery is probably dead from age. The easiest fix is to purchase one of the items linked below from shaveroutlet.com
i always thoiught that when you light is green it is fully charges yellow is weak and red is dead
maybe you have it reversed check it again also make sure that (altho hard to do) the battery is in right
I don't know how to solve your problem but, the three lights mean this:
Red LED light indicates the battery is being charged
Green LED light indicates that the battery is fully charged
Amber LED light incidates that the battery power level is low - the battery needs recharge.
Do not recharge you battery over 24 hours.
Depends, is there another LED present that yuo would expect to light up? Not familiar with these chargers. Ours do a number of things to let you know what is going on. A dead battery lights up the charger with ared LED, it blicks red if the battery is defective, and goes green when fully charged. along the way I think there is an amber LED indicator but I am not sure what that does. Your may go green or just blank out when fully charged.
When batteries are placed into the charge mode, the red light will come on. When fully charged, on those units with a green light, the green light will be an indication that your batteries are charged and if your unit has no green light, the fully charged indication will be when the red light turns iff.
