Can you confirm if my motherboard has gone. I have two ports for the monitor. One is an external Graphics Card and one an internal graphics card. The monitor screen has lines across it when i plug into the external graphics card and no picture with the integrated card.

You can use EITHER the OnBoard Graphics,
OR;
the Add-On Card graphics. (Graphics card)

BIOS will NOT support both at the same time.

If you wish to use dual monitors, get an AGP card that has more than one graphics port on it.

For example, although I'm using a graphics card based on the PCI Express technology, and not AGP technology; my card has a VGA port, DVI port, and HDMI port.

I use the VGA port, and the DVI port.

RCA EN-V L26HD31, (26 inch HDTV) to the VGA port.
HP 2009M 20 inch Widescreen monitor to the DVI port.

Had to install drivers for HP 2009M.

Let's say I had two DVI ports on the graphics card.
(ATI Radeon HD5450 is the graphics card I have)

But I have a monitor with a VGA cable, and a monitor with a DVI cable.
I would (And have) use a VGA to DVI Adapter.

Note that the DVI is Male, and the VGA is Female.
The graphics card DVI connector is Female.
The VGA Cable connector is Male.

So.............what is the manufacturer name, and model number of the graphics card; plus what type of monitors are you trying to use?
That is, what type of monitor cables do they have?

Know this;
My HDTV I'm using as a monitor is Digital. However I'm using a VGA cable on it. Best quality would be achieved if I got off my lazy rear, and attached a DVI Cable to it. It uses both.

VGA is Analog. A computer however puts out a digital video signal.
The computer has to convert the digital video signal to an Analog one. This slows the video signal down, and the quality is not as good.

Best to use a digital monitor. (Or a digital monitor WITH a digital cable. DVI Cable. Such as I need to do)

You are also using a PCI Express graphics card, NOT an AGP graphics card.

I'm wrong? OK.

In the meantime turn the computer off, unplug from power, and yank that AGP card out of the slot you put it in.

Tell me what expansion slot on the motherboard you put it in.

The Orange expansion slot on the motherboard, is a PCI-Express x16 slot. Uses a PCI Express graphics card -> ONLY

The white expansions slots are PCI.
Can use a PCI graphics card. CANNOT use an AGP graphics card.

If we are to discern by a few known statements;

1) It is believed in some 'geek communities', that using the same manufacturer of motherboard chipset, and graphics chipset; to be a good thing.

For example an AMD motherboard chipset 'plays well' with an AMD ATI graphics chipset;

Nvidia motherboard chipset 'plays well' with Nvidia graphics chipset.

Intel motherboard chipset with Intel graphics..............no wait,....... there is no Intel graphics chipset, unless it is -> Integrated Graphics.

2) DOES NOT MATTER what graphics memory type is used.

Motherboard can use DDR Sdram ram memory, and graphics card can use GDDR5.

REMEMBER;

1) ALWAYS follow Anti-Static Precautions.

2) INSTALL the software for the graphics card F-I-R-S-T,
(Drivers and 'control panel')

THEN unplug the computer from power, follow Anti-Static Precautions, and Physically plug the graphics card into the motherboard, and install.

3) L@@k at the system requirements (Minimum) for the graphics card.
Specifically the Power Supply requirements. You need a Power Supply with enough Wattage, to handle the graphics card.

Problem with;

1) Video cable:

A) Video cable connection on motherboard side is loose, and/or on back of LCD screen.

B) Video cable is damaged.

2) screen Inverter:

screen Inverter is bad.

3) LCD screen:

LCD screen is bad.

4) Graphics chipset:

Graphics chipset is bad.

Suggest you connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port (Connector) on your laptop.
See if the problem is the graphics chipset, Or video cable, Or display assembly.

You didn't state what manufacturer and Model Number of laptop this is.
All I can do is state generic information.

This is an example of a VGA Cable, and VGA connector,

The VGA connector will be on the side, or back of your laptop.
For the VGA monitor you can use a CRT type monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor that has a VGA cable.

Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect the external VGA monitor to the laptop.
Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.

Turn the laptop on.
By default the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
IF not;

There are at least 3 display options.
1) Laptop internal monitor ONLY
2) Laptop internal monitor AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

Press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.
(For an example HP's usually use the F4 key for a Display Toggle-Over key)

Display shows the same on the external VGA monitor?
You have a bad graphics chipset.

[ Some laptops have been erroneously stated as having a graphics card, when in fact they do not.
The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is soldered directly to the motherboard.
This is Integrated Graphics.

There is no changeable, replaceable graphics card. Therefore the solution is motherboard replacement ]

IF, the display is good on the external monitor, you have a problem with the Video Cable, and/or in the Display Assembly.

I would definitely make sure the "source" button is on the appropriate output (monitors can switch between dvi/vga inputs). Try toggling that button on the front of your monitor to see if that improves the situation.

The graphics card is built-in on the motherboard and cannot be changed.
If you are having problems with the graphics card, try re-installing the video driver.
To test the video card, connect an external monitor to the video port on the T40 power up the monitor first then boot up the T40. The video information will transfer to the monitor automatically, provided the video card is OK.

Use your AGP dual-video card for two and using a PCI VGA card for the third. It is best if the same manufacturer video driver is used for both cards, as two different ones could be problematic.

Internal video and AGP / PCI Express video cards use the same "pipeline" so you can only use one or the other, not both.

If you need additional video ports, you HAVE to get additional cards / a video card with multiple video ports.

The issue might be due to malfunction on teh LCD monitor or internal malfunction, to confirm the same connect the notebook to external monitor and check for the issue

Since, there is no display even when an external monitor is connected to the Notebook, this confirms that the issue is with graphics card.
As with most of the Notebook, the graphics card installed in this notebook is also integrated on the Motherboard and is not user replaceable. In this case, the complete motherboard is changed. So, it's required to contact any service center to get it replaced without damaging any other internal components.

This could indicate a problem with the graphics card. Take the card out and clean it, then clean the slot that it fits into. (I normally use a small dry paintbrush).

Replace the card, making sure that you push it down gently but firmly and ensure that the plastic clip has gone back correctly that hold the card in place. Rescrew the card back to the casing correctly and reboot.

Hopefully this will resolve your problem. If it does not, to determine whether or not your graphics card is faulty. Change the monitor lead over to the onboard graphics port instead of the agp/pci port and reboot. If the monitor works properly with no problems, then you have a bad graphics card.
