My "brother in-laws" notebook won't boot up properly. When booting up it presents me with a blank screen. I'm not sure if its an internal component, the hard drive malfunctioning, or the ram going bad, or the screen needing replacement. I would like to get it functioning it again but not have to pour hundreds of dollars into it. He lost the adapter that came with it but the adapter I have to an older HP notebook seems to show the greens lights when pressing the on button for the laptop.

- Problem is that even if I get a compatible adapter, that won't solve the issue. The issue revolves around the fact when you boot up the notebook, nothing appears on screen but you can hear the computer trying to do something. All the lights show up also on the keyboard. So I'm not sure if the malfunction is in the hard drive, ram, screen, or inside the notebook itself. Is there anyway to diagnose the issue without spending over $50 at this point in time for a technician to look it over?
