Can't send or receive faxes on my Canon MF 6550

Hello. I use Windows XP and have successfully used my Canon MF6550 for scanning, printing, copying and faxing for more than 6 months. A couple of times in the past two months I had trouble getting online, so unplugged and replugged everything, which solved the problem. I don't know if that has anything to do with the fact that I'm no longer able to send or receive faxes. People trying to send me faxes receive an error message. Occasionally I find my machine blinking its orange error message light, and I assume someone tried to send me a fax, but I'm not sure if that's the reason. When I try to send a fax, the machine tries twice and then prints an error message. My phone number for faxing and for DSL is the same, so I have both connected to my modem (Westell Model 6100). Anything you can do to help me restore my ability to use my fax machine will be greatly appreciated!

My MFC copies, scans and prints, but produces error messages when I attempt to send a fax or when others try to send me faxes. One expert suggested checking my cartridges, but I think low toner would also affect my ability to copy and print. I need more suggestions please

How do I update the driver? Do I reinstall it with the software, or do I find an update online? If so, where do I find it?

    I have no filters installed.

My fax machine has been working for 6 months with the phone line connected to the "DSL" plug on the modem. Ive never used a standard modem with this machine. However, I notice that circumventing the modem (plugging the fax machine directly into the phone line) solves the problem of sending faxes from the platen. However, how do I now send faxes from my computer?

  • dockhall Jul 28, 2008

this was very helpful, because it provided me with an understanding of why things are happening the way they are! I think my modem must have included a filter and it's not working any longer. I'll check with the provider that sent it to me.
    Thanks!

Have you just changed over to dsl from standard modem when i had this problem it was because to fax out/in i needed a standard 56kb modem to do so as dsl does not go through the normal phone lines and cannot connect to standard phones which is what fax machines are on

Is there a DSL filter connect to the phone line that you are faxing from?

You can't use a DSL line to send and receive faxes from unless you put a filter on it. If your in an office your line may be filtered from the phone wiring outlet. Check with your provider on that if thats the case.

The best way to find out is if you are getting a dial tone with no static in the background. If you are getting no tone and/or static in the tone, you will need to have your line filtered in order to send and receive faxes.

Another way to make sure it is working properly is that the output from your DSL modem should be plugged into the fax line.

This doesn't require drivers of software to get it fixed. It's happening withing your phone line or you could be having trouble with you DSL modem as well.

The best thing to do is check with your phone company or provider.

Try printing a test page. Is it also blank? If so, you should check your ink system (cartridges full, etc.)

Multiple fax copies only 1 or 2 get through

First check to see if all 5 are bing sent. Sometimes paper sticks to each other and you may only see 1 or 2. Also your telphone line has a lot to do with it. If you are using a digital telephone line with your internet line such as a vontage telephone, the signal is takene from your internet line for your telephone and sometimes such as when you are on the internet and trying to fax, you do not have enough signal strength. sometimes sutting off the internet works. Also what does the report say from your copier/fax are 5 pages being sent. In the set up this Canon you can get a report after you send a fax....

The laser Apeture is sticking.

What i did to mine it Sorta hit it on the paper side and caused the shutter to start working

if you take the toner and use a screwdriver to push down the shutter, it will start working again.

the shutter is sticking.

Try to press te System Monitor Button and scroll using the > to Print Status. If there is a print job in there press ok the < to cancel the print job. You may want to check the other status windows in case it is a Fax or Copy job instead of a print job.
